actually, what is the value of a rec? why are they such a big deal?
1. If you really like a post, agree with it and/or find it poetically written and you really think others should read it. You give it a rec.
2. If you really agree with someone you can use it to save yourself the trouble of repeating that person. This also saves others the trouble of reading through 10 posts stating exactly the same.

I think there should be some science dedicated purely to rec's on this site. Any new post dealing with how crap rec's are immediately gets a multitude of recs. Any follow ups to that posts gets x/2 recs, further posts x/3 and when we reach 0 rec's someone starts up a new thread so they can be at the top of the rec pile.
No offense, but the general forum is starting to resemble some high school IRC channel. 🙂
