have to agree and you beat me to it, i was going to pm russ to stop recs.

They should be to actually recomend, not have 3 threads in the 1st page all about them.

I think that the problem is not people who posts trying to get recs, but people who gives meaningless recs for meaningless posts.
This way recommendation loses most of its value.

Agree 100%. I don't pay any attention to rec's. I don't really care if someone get 20 or 30 for a post, because I never look to see how many rec's the post has.

It's not like anyone can trade them in for a free queen πŸ™„πŸ™„

A rec's value lies in the silent majority. If you Saint Nick post a good idea or are against a proposed idea, then those in the silent majority will use your post as a conduit to Russ & Chrismo.I f used properly it gives everyone a voice albeit someone elses. It is how I look at them anyway. This way even if people give rec's for silliness, they still hold a value in the serious issues.Mike

I thought "rec" stood for "recreationally inclined" and had to do with clandestine references to some "members only" chess swinger's club...Red Hot Pawn meets Sexy Black Queen and Well Endowed Knight for some three-dimensional chess-ercize and mating techniques...

Exy, it's a new thread and it has nothing to do with 'you know who' ....

No-one can MAKE you press the Rec button you know.

I thought we were just having some fun. Everywhere has its own in jokes, this was one of RHPs.

weren't they started so that people could see all the important/decent posts? but has anyone treid to trawl through all the recommended ones?

but-personally-i couldn't really care about them. i don't rec very much, but am always thrilled when i get a rec! πŸ˜€

it's a symbol of status!

hail to the recs!

Suppose each thread with a recommended post in it got just one entry in the Recommended threads page (with the latest rec'd post displayed). The user can then browse the thread to see all recommended posts. This should cut down the current scenario where Recommended posts over the last 7 days runs into 30 web pages!

Fundamentally, I think the recs idea is good and should stay - it's a nice way of identifying meaningful (atleast some) posts and for readers to express their appreciation without bloating the thread with "I agree" postings.

Well, I see that my post has made no impact on the needless recommending and the needless asking for these recs. There have already been at least two new threads that were made for the sole purpose of gaining recs. I now have 12 recs and 8 from one post. My first 4 were what i would call earned. I put a lot of thought into these posts. Since i haven't been posting much and rather just reading. I used to scan through the recommending posts, but now i see that this is useless because of some very silly posts that just asked for recs. Well, i guess that i'm gonna have to put up with this for a while, and hopefully it will get dull to everyone else, as well as me and stop it.

Knapster, I think that's exactly it: it will get dull. It's a joke that will run it's course, and I think it would be a mistake to get too worked up about a phenomenon that's lasted about a week. Just wait and see and will probably die down on its own.
