I always thought that recs were worthless (I myself have a lot of stupid recs) and seeing the use of recs in the last days I was wondering if it's the case or not to just eliminate this feature,as 3/4 of the list of recommended posts is pure trash.
I just browsed the list of recced posts and it's very hard to find some that REALLY deserved a rec.
Any thoughts?

A limit to how many recs you can give a week might work.
I think we should get rid of recs or adopt a weekly limit. They have become meaningless, and they are of different value to the different people that give them out. A weekly limit would establish a certain somewhat set value for one rec. It's like we're a country that keeps printing currency, so the currency becomes worthless.

Originally posted by jimslyp69Was that a clever way to support my point? By not actually giving me a rec, were you pointing out how valueless a rec is? Were you showing that no rec is the same as a rec by saying you gave me one, but not actually giving me one? In fact, if a rec has no value, how do I know that you didn't give me one? Perhaps you did, but since it does nothing, and has no substance, I can't tell. Recs don't really exist. Since nothing has any substance, or real meaning in the grand sceme of things, can't one conclude that, none of us exist! But wait, if I don't exist, who decided that we don't exist? Black is white. Up is down. I'm a yankee-doodle dandy. Hahahahahaha. Red slew fondue. The horse is nothing without insight. But colors are deaf, Yoda doesn't use the force rightfully. Mis zapatos son blancos y negros, y me duele la cabeza anoche para yo. Voy a lo playa en el desayuno, que me da su mano franco en la piscina de hoy.
That gets a rec from me.
Or, perhaps you just forgot.
I find the rec's motivate me to write better articles.
Obviously the odd rec, here and there, doesn't do much, but when I write a post which receives more than 6 or 7, I feel quite proud. I really think that people liked what I wrote.
Equally obviously, "Liking" is a question of taste. So, if you have 70.000 people on a chess site, receiving 7 rec's isn't all that much.
Receiving 7 recs for a post, when the average amount of recs is 1, however, is quite nice.
It still means that if a select group of people favour a single sort of post (say sexual or political or whatever) that this sort of post will receive more recs than another which could be equally good.
All I can say is: Write to your goal group.
If you know what the people want and you can give it to them, you will be appreciated. I see nothing wrong in that.
On the other hand, it is obviously a measurement of subjective quality. That's always bad. For as it may motivate me, it may demotivate someone else, who writes better articles, yet receives fewer recs.
This being said, it is rather obvious that recs should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Why get rid of anything which is taken with a pinch of salt? Surely that's seriousness gone extreme?
