Good question! They were already in full swing when I arrived.

It appears it may have been in 2002-2003 as the first won one was in 2003

I think it was back around mid 2003, based on looking at the "Red Hot Rebel" clan. I think they were one of the original ones from when clans were first introduced.The clan leader, Rhymester, appears to have started that one during that time and is still their leader.

The only clan I ever joined was "Knights of Valhalla", and I only played for them for a short period of time. The few games I played were in '03 - '04.

There was a "groups" feature originally, the purpose of which i can't remember, a result of me working for a communities site at the start of RHP.

This migrated into clans. Details will be buried in the forums somewhere.

The clan feature seems to have taken on a life of its own.
