Hi there, I recently set up a chat room with the intention of using it for the urban dead game but we don't need it anymore... Now instead of deleting it I wondered if a chat room is something that could work with the General Forum populace. My initial thoughts are no. However, I am willing to run the room for a trial period and if enough people are using it and using it responsibly I will leave it up.
IRC is Internet Relay Chat and is basically a group IM.
First of all you will need an IRC program... I find Chatzilla (a firefox add-on) to be perfectly usable. However you can access the room through your browser at www.mibbit.com or use any other IRC program.
The server is - irc.nexuswar.com
The room is called - #RHP
The room password is - ggay
I have added some instructions for the chatzilla add-on below.
1. Install the chatzilla add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16
2. Open chatzilla and in the drop down box bottom left change your nickname to your preferred nick
3. First you will need to attach to the server. In the bottom field type -
/attach irc.nexuswar.com
4. Then you will need to register your nick and protect it with a password by entering -
/ns register password email
Obviously replacing password with your required password and email with your email address so they can send you a confirmation email.
5. Then you need to join the RHP channel, type this -
/join #RHP ggay
6. Every time you join the server you will need to confirm to it that you are the rightful user of your nick, you do this by typing in the irc.nexuswar.com tab, not the #RHP tab - type -
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
changing the password bit for your nick pw. the channel will prompt you to do this anyway.
7. Then once you are logged in click on the IRC drop down menu and check the Open this Channel at start up option to avoid having to go through all this everytime you log in.
That's it really.

1. You are required to act like an adult regarding what you post up in the chat. Remember that this site is accessed by people aged 13+
2. The usual things will earn you a ban - ie. racism, threats, general asshattery.
3. You are required not to get offended by people swearing, it's a chat room and like it or not swear words are a common part of our language.
4. Everyone is welcome
As I said this is a trial, if it goes well it will stay, if it gets mistreated I will pull it. Very simple.
I'm there now, come and join me for a chat. If you need any assistance with IRC post here. It does seem very complicated but once you get the hang of a few basic commands it's pretty easy to use.

We had a private RHP chat room on a seperate server in the early days. It was not operated by the RHP staff but it was set up exclusively for our members only. It lasted for about two weeks before the room was shut down.

EDIT: This was back around March of 2002, and the person who set up the link to the chat room was Vampire_Man. If you look him up and go back through some of his old forum posts, you can probably get an idea of what transpired.
