Rekkies is from the word Rekken, which means Stretch.

I think we used to call them elastic bands and rubber bands back in Scotland.

Nowadays I presume they are low-grade terrorist weapons and are banned from schools altogether.

elastic bands - and when i left school the "craze" of folding a peice of paper into a hardstrip with a fold in the middle and launching it off the band was (finally) almost dead...they hurt. badly...

Oh, and we call them rubber bands in Aust. We're a proper English colony and haven't gone off the rails entirely like other naughty, little rebellious countries I could name.
