A better idea in my view would be to limit their posting abilities to the 'HELP' and 'MEET OPPONENTS' fora, until such time as they have completed something like 250 moves ...[text shortened]... site and not just spamming aad nauseum from day one. Call it an initiation period if you like.
Surely paying the subscription fee is a more solid way of showing a serious interest in the RHP.

Yes, but banning people from using the forums until they have subscribed is not a very smart way of encouraging people to subscribe.

Which is why I wasn't advocating a total ban.
I think either my suggestion of limited posts or your suggestion of limited access would work just fine.

Regardless of who all the crappy posts can be attributed to, the nonsubscriber-bashing that goes on at rhp is hardly encouragement to subscribe.

Are you signing up to support the site, to play more chess, or to buy your slice of cool and be one of the big boys? I've been getting mixed signals.

Some of you seem to forget that not all currencies are created equal and what for many of you seems like a token amount is a much larger chunk of someone elses pay cheque.

This holier than though subscribe or drop dead attitude peeves me off.

venting over, back to topic: I'd guess that the reason non subscribers might be more inclined to talk baloney is because they feel less accountable. And if they really lose face they can choose another username and start over with ease.

5% from me??
I resent this remark... I am more than capable of spouting mindless crap with the best of the non-subscribers. This post alone barely scratches the surface of my ability to bore the will to live out of most people.

i am soon to be a subscriber, i wouldnt of had a second thought of being one if it wasnt for the forums,

what i think should happen is; lets say a non-sub is spamming and posting crap in the forums, subscribers should have the option to vote
the non- subscriber off! if he/she has 5 votes and exceed this amount you are bannded from the site?
give us a little credit, not all newbies are that bad!! come on!!!!

While your post has some merit, it would also lead to a witch hunt.

Some lesser form of this might work though.

I would be greatly upset if non-subscribers were banned from posting. If someone is posting rubbish the mods should step in. Why knock off a large portion of the site because of a few rubbishy threads?

I was here for 6 months before I subscribed, and the main reason I did was because I enjoyed the forums; and I'm sure I'm not the only one. A warm welcome will recruit more members than this 'pay or bugger off' attitude. If I had seen a thread such as this soon after finding the site, I almost certainly would have moved on.

Chris and Russ have chosen to allow people to use this site for free, so it is utterly ridiculous to claim anyone who does is a 'cheapskate'. If a non-subscriber is willing to accept the limitations imposed on them, then that person's opinion in the forums is as valid as mine, in my view.

So, chin up, non-subscribers! Try to use the occasional full stop and Capital Letter to keep SirUlrich happy (lacy underwear helps too, if I remember correctly), and we will all get along fine.

I think that's a very fair attitude - as long as the Mods are on the case.

I do actually get annoyed with the idiot posts that appear far too often, and to be fair 95% are from non-subscribers but then I am also sure that 95% of the non-subscribers are not the guilty parties.

As in most walks of life therefore it is a case of the idiot minority forcing an issue that impacts on each and every person in the respective community.

Maybe we need vitual ASBOs ? :-)

I'd be happy to take charge as the ASBO Mod for idiot posts!

Two points, if I may

1) What does ASBO stand for?
2) If 95% of users are non-subscribers then it is self-evident that 95% of the rubbish posts are from them.

All I would like to see is the end of rubbish threads ("fight talk *slap* *punch*" etc).

1) Anti Social Behaviour Order ( it's a UK thing )
2) I think you mis-understand my logic

Perhaps simply a stricter policy for rubbishy, barely legible, no real point topics might keep everyone happy. Though even then, something only needs to be done if they pick up substantially.

My Opinion:
Get rid off all non-subscribers from the forums and this site would improve 1000%. In fact as a test let Russ stop everyone not willing to pay from posting for a month and see how things im ...[text shortened]... ey could air their "views" in a Non Payer Forum and no where else
Sounds Sensible to me
🙂
its not that im unwilling to pay but i dont have a way of paying (too young for a credit card)

It definitely made my decision easier, Werner.
