Many places would be up to their knees in rats without them. Hawks and other birds of prey need them to survive.

Of course the basic answer is: there is no "point". Your question has the underlying premise of "what good are they to humans?" While protection of out food supply is one solid answer, the only point that a snake cares about is making little snakes in its own image. 🙂

If it weren't for snakes, you'd still be walking around wearing a fig leaf.

I'm terrified and fascinated by snakes - the dangerous kinds, big and venemous. I watch all the programmes I can find about them on TV - I love them and fear them.

You forgot to mention that Cleopatra would have lived longer than 38 years.

Moose, I've been wondering if snakes have attorneys on retainer with current balances of $37.18 on their accounts.

Actually, the snake caused them to wear the fig leaf....indirectly.

I had a boa constrictor round my neck once - it was very big, dry and very heavy and I was so concentrated...

I like them, partly because they have zero feet but move around very well. Plus they are very dangerous.
