Is that some more nonsense by Graham Hancock or a similarly vacuous self-publicist going on about reversal of the magnetic poles?

If I understood correctly this nonsense is because on some day in December 2012 the earth will be aligned with the sun, and the centre of the milky way. Also it seems the last year on some old mayan calender is 2012 - probably because they didn't have more space on the stone they wrote it on...

This would all be a lot funnier if there weren't major earthquakes happening every other week. Yes, yes, total nonsense. Tut tut...end of the world lunacy...pish tosh...earth's been here billions of years. Solid as a rock. Harrumph!

The Earth will be here at least 5 billion years more... question is will WE?

Hmmmm?

I don't really want to be here 5 billion more years anyway. There are times when I think it would be ok if you left me off at the next corner. It's been fun, but what else ya got?

Yea, there was something about the planets aligning and also what Marcusr said about reversing of the poles.

Well, reversing of the poles would be kind of funny actually. Wouldn't that mess up the pilots! Ha!
But then would we still have Nordlys in the Northern hemisphere?

Geography's not my strong point, and I don't know what a Nordly is, but the answer is surely no, as the Northern hemisphere will by then be the Southern hemisphere... won't it?

No. The geographic north is still the geographic north. It's just that the magnetic north changes to the magnetic south. This has been happening for millennia, every couple of thousands of years the magnetic north changes due to the inner currents in the centre of the earth or something like that. It's pretty normal.

Once it flips, it stays that way for 7-800k years yes? Are we gonna have to spend the best part of a million years saying that the magnetic north pole is in the southern hemisphere? No. The way I see it, it's a simple choice, either they change all the compasses, or they change all the maps. I'm betting it's the maps. I'll put a fiver on it...

I guess they'll cope - they did last time.

The magnetic pole keeps wandering anyway, so it would be mad to adjust geographic north to the magnetic north. And what would they do during the hundreds or thousands of years of reversal?
