'The Swiss government yesterday declared war on the world. The news was delivered to global leaders at 12.00 pm GMT, in a note attached to boxes of hand-made swiss chocolates. A Swiss Minister was reported as saying, "After 500 years of peace we've had enough. It's time for war! What, you think we've been making army knives for you? Ha!"

'The government has already frozen all bank accounts held by foreign investors, and intends to use the money to finance their bid for world domination. A British spokesman from Whitehall expressed deep concern at the news, saying "We expect the Swiss army to be a force to be reckoned with; no doubt they will run like clockwork."'

Is that like the Bolivian navy with one boat that hasn't put to er... lake, in thirty years?

Though am sure the Swiss boat is a little more spangly...

Switzerland is one of the few completely inland European countries. It is surrounded by mountains and has no navy.

I don't know much about Bolivian Navy, but their army is up there with the SAS.

We had trouble getting through a checkpoint in the Alti-Plano until we 'bribed' the M16 toting checkpoint guy with 2 eggs and a handful of sweets.

Seeing as this is a chess site, this anecdote is probably relevant as well. We were driving around the perimeter of a Bolivian Airbase on the way into La Paz, and there were two perimeter guards, sitting on the grass, M16s leaning against the fence, playing a game of chess. Made me laugh.

And they still managed to win yachting's America's Cup ... the rest of the world has no chance

believe it or not, switzerland does has a navy. apart from the merchant fleet, switzerland has two lakes which serve as international frontiers, and both are home to a few patrol craft which make up the navy.

i heard a story once that there is also a submarine in lake geneva but i don't know how true that is - you'd think they'd get bored sailing it up and down... up and down...

I heard that the Swiss have built a massive network of subterranean aquatic tunnels connecting Lake Geneva with the Atlantic Ocean and the North and Mediterranean seas. They are also rumored to have a tunnel leading into Loch Ness...
