Its funny what guys will do to impress girls.
The most recent observation of human rutting behavior occurred when two Taiwanese university students donned protective helmets and revved their motor scooters in an effort to impress a comely female of their species. The two were the same class, but not friends. Other classmates reported that both men fancied the same female student.
After indulging in a few drinks during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the two encountered each other, and words were spoken. The gauntlet was thrown down. In lieu of horses, the two would ride their motor scooters at each other at high speed, and the one who didn't turn away would win the exclusive right to pursue the female.
Obviously both were very keen on her, because neither of them turned away. Their scooters collided head-on at 50 mph. Both died instantly. The girl at the center of the rut refused to comment, other than to say that she "wasn't interested in either of them."

Golly, is that why they call 'em the Darwin Awards? Thanks for the explanation. 😕
one of my favourites:
[AP, Mammoth Lakes, CA]
A San Anselmo man died yesterday when he hit a lift tower at the Mammoth Mountain ski area while riding down the slope on a foam pad. Matthew David Hubal, 22, was pronounced dead at Centinela Mammoth Hospital. The accident occurred about 3 a.m., the Mono County Sheriff's Department said.
"Hubal and his friends apparently had hiked up a ski run called Stump Alley and undid some yellow foam protectors from some of the lift towers", said Lieutenant Mike Donnelly of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.
The pads are used to protect skiers who might hit the towers. The group apparently used the pads to slide down the ski slope and Hubal crashed into a tower. It has since been investigated that the tower he hit was indeed one with its pads removed.

what the heck is this???

"Note: Police reported that Geoff had a history of mental problems, so he may not have been of sound mind at the time. If so, this is regarded as a disqualification for a Darwin Award."
Why are mental problems a disqualification? If Darwin said"survival of the fittest", and a mental condition is an impairment to that fitness... well then that's just darwinism too, isn't it? I don't think it should be used for disqualification... opinions on this?

Stupid is as stupid does, as Forrest Gump claimed his mother said. If you're mental, then perhaps your stupidity (such as it is) isn't really your fault.
Edit: For example, if you are schizophrenic, then jumping off a bridge may be the result of "listening to the voices in your head" rather than the result of a stupid plan that you think will save you from harm.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to discriminate against people with mental problems, I'm just saying that if the makers of the site claim darwin as their basis, then in my opinion that sentence shouldn't be on there, regardless whether it is morally/politically correct or not.

The Darwin Awards are about people who's stupidity removes them from the gene pool, and so strengthening the gene pool by that very same removal of stupidity.

Here's her initial statement:"and yet it still eliminates them from the gene pool by means of something [/b]spectacular[/b] ( ??? )... which is what the darwin awards are about. "
Darwin's theory of evolution is based on survival of the fittest. That way the gene pool is always strongest. The fittest, strongest members of a species are the ones who get to survive and mate and contribute to the gene pool.
If you don't have 2 braincells to rub together and manage to take your genes out of the genepool (through death or losing the ability to reproduce) through your stupidity, then that is a great example of natural selection. You're too stupid to contribute to the gene pool.
I don't know where in the theory of evolution, Darwin refers to "spectacularity".

Its also not as much fun to laugh at crazy people who manage to remove their genes from the gene pool through craziness as it is to laugh at stupid people who manage to remove their genes from the gene pool through stupidity.
