"... the best game in town."

Late one evening by the fireplace, many years ago, I said to Mr. Reubens, "Chess really is the greatest game in the whole world." He smiled

as we were putting away the pieces and, saying goodnight at the door, replied... "During this next week please think about what you just said."

Next Tuesday night we met at The Community Center but the subject never came up. Another week later at Kermit Pransky's home, during a break

for refreshments his wife had prepared, E.M. leaned toward me to softly ask if I had given any thought as to where chess ranked. "Yes, Sir,"

I answered, and repeated my previous conclusion. After munching for a good while on a blueberry muffin he whispered, "You're close, Bobby,

but chess is number two. Number one is friends talking. As you grow older, you'll come to realize honest conversation is the best game in town."

P.S. Boston area newspaper article and photo of this esteemed and beloved early mentor from Russia may be of interest to you...

Hi, Dave. Thanks for your post. For a number of years it was my very

good fortune to reside in Sharon, MA, about 30 miles from Boston.

Edit: Dave, still have an inscribed copy of E.M.'s book, as does my son
who received it as the prize for winning his first tournament in 1st Grade,
going up against 4th & 5th Graders in the Community Center finals.

Dave, in addition to regular weekly meets at The Sharon Community Center, we often got together a second evening at the homes

of E.M. Reubens, Ben Landy, Kermit Pransky, Edmund Brown and Tigran Schaak. E.M. and I were on our second correspondence

game, following my transfer with Colgate Palmolive to Chicago, when Ben's kind note regarding E.M.'s passing arrived in the mail.

Love is the greatest of all. Love of your fellow man. Love of God and country, then chess, or is it sex? I don't remember. 😕

did you claim the win, or call it a draw? what's the accepted etiquette when your opponent kicks the bucket during the game?

Interesting you would mention that, Bobby. My friend and I went to our most recent chess club meeting last week and he allowed as he hadn't had as much fun in months. He chatted with fellow club members about politics, local happenings, etc. And about our upcoming tournamnent. It lasted a couple of hours. He dind't play a single game that night. And we had a blast.

Pink, thanks for sharing. Look forward to shouting you a round of good ole Texas ale sometime soon. Good-natured laughter, deep and meaningful conversation by the fireplace on an icy cold Boston night, and making good decisions from a position of strength are the foundations from which we construct the less ephemeral layers of friendship and trust.
