Im guessing boardwalk is our Mayfair. Same game different names of places. No one ever won with just those two, too expensive and so many other places to land on and pay out before you can built your hotels.
it was the advance to boardwalk card that gave it extra value

You would have to build houses first rare anyone had enough money left to stay in the game so didn't often get to build a hotel on Boardwalk.

funny thing about the game
everybody had their own rules
their own special touch
one rule we had was that a player could borrow from another player or sell his property for more than the mortgage value
I don't think that that is in the official rules

Still not worth it, how many cards in the game? What if it comes out early, long time for it to come around. We should find a site to play online 😉

The borrow thing I’ve never done, probably not in the rules but buying property or trading seems logical and probably in the rules but I don’t know, I mean if I have 2 greens and you have the other it might benefit both to trade something or just pay for it.

Either a fair trade or we try to keep other players from having enough streets to build on, I thought.

No it is not in the rules, as you said people made up some of their own and if it was ok with everyone then it was fair for everyone. As an example we would put so much in if we landed on free parking, I forget the amount now and after a complete round of everyone landing on it the the person to land on it again after everyone had landed there would collect what ever was on the free parking spot.

From what I remember that was ok, of course sometimes you'd have to pay or trade more than it was worth as you'd be building houses on it when you had the 3rd one.

one thing that was allowed by the rules was bidding
if a player did not want to buy the property then it could be up for bids
we never used that rule
most learn to play at a young age and tend to make it simple

Yes, we didn't bother with the bidding either unless two people wanted the same property which was rare. Lots of trading going on though.

That's not how I remember it. We played that all the bank fees would go to the 'kitty' and if you landed on Free Parking, you got the 'kitty'.

I always landed on it the turn after someone else.

My favorite thing was to build only to four houses and not get the hotel. Eventually this would cause a housing shortage and others could not build at all. And since the rules say you must go to four houses before buying the hotel, people can't just throw up hotels instead.

that's the way we played also
the house sets the rules

Yeah, borrowing from other players just hyper-extends the game time.

And for a game that could take 3 hours already, this was unacceptable.

Trading, though, is a part of the game.
