i've just finished watching The Remains of the Day (again). what a film. i've been blown away yet again. the day i don't have a wee bubble, when anthony hopkins says goodbye as emma thompson is driven off into the night, is hopefully a long time in coming.

another film which come close is Breaking The Waves (i come from the same part of the world) but at least that film has an uplifting ending.

just fyi, by the way.

I think a pretty depressing but good film I have seen lately is The House of Sand and Fog with Jennifer Connelly & Ben Kingsley.

Lady Marmalade (or whatever) so sad... I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes of it...

I recall being aghast at "Rings of Bright Water": a lovely Disney style otter film till the last scene, when for no good reason and out of the blue, as the wee otter runs along a trench in a field, a farmer cuts its head off with a spade. Dead. Film ends. I was only 6. Distaught.

On a serious note:

Schindler's List. I wept when I saw it in the theatre.

Saddest movies of all time: Battlefield Earth, Waterworld/The Postman (come on, it was the same awful movie)

Waterworld? With Kevin Costner? Liked it a lot myself. Or do you mean a different film?
