@Earl-of-Trumps saidSometimes people forget that the world's best, the world's greatest, the worlds fastest, the worlds prettiest, the worlds richest, are all just people... plain ordinary flesh and bone.

@Torunn saidDon't know, Torunn, but I would guess it's a written rule.
@Earl-of-Trumps
Is it a rule - written or unwritten - to be properly dressed in chess competitions?
FIDE is paying them a lot of money
@Earl-of-Trumps saidExcept that... Rapid Chess has always been a quick fix for chess players. When you go to parks in big cities that are chess hotspots you see kids and young adults playing this game. It's where it got its start. It is perhaps THE most informal category in chess. Ask any of them to go home and change before you play them and they will laugh you out of the park. Tournaments at every level for this category of chess should respect its roots. I think demanding a Rapid Chess player, even in a tournament, to eschew jeans is an outrageous request. Carlsen speaks for the masses. Good for him.

Many aspects in this:
* A world champion eschews rules he had folowed eralier: smells of arrogance
* A person being held back from playing because of clothes: smells of traditionalism
* A world champion who announced (indirectly) not to play that tournament next year goes out with a lot of pres coverage: smells of a merketing gag for the alternative event next year
...and a few more
@Earl-of-Trumps saidNot taking sides here but If I may ask: Was he supposed to wear slacks?

@mchill saidNo idea, but it looks like it would be slacks. I have not looked up the rule
Not taking sides here but If I may ask: Was he supposed to wear slacks?
@Earl-of-Trumps saidHe was fined and said he didn’t have a problem with that happening. He was also trying to get them to let him play without changing that day, but would show up the next day dressed correctly. They said no he said fuk you and left?

@Earl-of-Trumps saidI recall the case of an Iranian woman playing without a niqab in country where the niqab is not required; fearing she would be beaten to death by the Iranian morality police if she returned to Iran, she sought and received asylum in Spain. I played in the U.S. Open in Palo Alto Calif in 1981 and one surfer boy showed up barefooted; no one paid him any mind. Good grief, this isn't the runway in a Paris high fashion salon; shouldn't this be about chess, and not attire ?

@moonbus saidWhat would we do in the event that @FilthyHerman showed up??

@Very-Rusty saidWell I watched him say it right after with Levy interviewing him. If it’s a rule while playing and everyone else is following it, how is this good for him in doing so?
Providing that did happen, good for him!!! 🙂
