Three by Stephen Crane (1871-1900)

"Many Red Devils

Many red devils ran from my heart
And out upon the page.
They were so tiny
The pen could mash them.
And many struggled in the ink.
It was strange
To write in this red muck
Of things from my heart."

"A Man Feared

A man feared that he might find an assassin;
Another that he might find a victim.
One was more wise than the other."

"In The Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, 'Is it good, friend?'
'It is bitter-- bitter,' he answered,
'But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart.'"
