Maybe the surgery was life threatening and something went wrong....

Who knows?

What is certain is that everyone who plays knows that here is a possibility of a timeout loss if you do not move within the agreed timescale. Simple ...[text shortened]... opponent with a vacation flag set, then again I suppose the rules allow it and RULES are RULES.
Sounds like he has not moved in more ways than one.

Now that really is a time out!

Wrong! The only reason you can claim through vacation setting is because people abused it when you couldn't!

Russchanged that, and expected that people would use some common sense before claiming.

How i feel about it is in my previous post, so no need to repeat it here.

People abuse the flags. There is no reasonable way to deny this. I usually respect vacation flags, but have TO'd people who had a flag up and didn't move in their games with me, although they were active in other games that they weren't actually in a bad position. As far as people who think that a time out isn't a legit win...have you ever played OTB chess? The clock is real, and a time win is a win. It causes time pressure, which in turn causes bad moves, etc...
A timeout is a legitimate way to win a game. The vacation flag is a courtesy between players, nothing more.

I always try and give a date for my return in my vacation setting, I also tell my opponents I will be away and ask them not to time me out. I have never been timed out as a result and only ever time others out if they offer no explanation and no vacation setting. Even then I give them a final reminder and 48 hours.

That's more or less how i do it as well. If someone asks me not to time them out because of such-and-so I'll respect that.

Yes, i play OTB. the vacation flag is like having to go to college in the middle of a game. You tell your opponent you can't make a move for a little while.

OK, so you go to the bathroom, or to lunch, or to the moon. Your clock wtill ticks unless the game is adjourned by mutual agreement. You have a point there. But, as you already stated, the vacation flags were being abused by some, which is why TO's are necessary sometimes.

WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO????

Fred,

Remember that T/O is automatic after two days in the tournament games. The victory will be awarded to the last mover when the maximum allowed time has passed.

Harri / Luck

PS: I suffer a lot of T/O losses, but I claim them often in the tournament games.

This is an odd and interesting subject. Much like the debate on "cheaters" or people who use engines to play.

I view this site as a place to play chess when I don't have an actual physical person sitting in front of me to play. The ratings are useful so you know you are playing someone around your skill level or what ever level you choos. Thats it, plain and simple. If I was worried about my "rating" and how it affected my overall life and self-worth, I probably wouldn't play correspondence chess. Join a chess club where all the games are in person.

All in...Why do people cheat, why do people time-out as quickly as possible, why do people setting rating limits for challenges that are 200-300 points below their rating, and why do bananas grow on trees. The answer is quite simple they just do.

And yes I TO people (not with vacation settings unless there is no note) because I don't like having a bunch of stale games.
