The question is top 50 guitarists,it appears to me when ever they do these lists it is most always rock guitarists,Hendrix was good yes but a top guitarist should be someone that is at the top of there field in all aspects of music.blues,country,jazz,rock,etc.To be the top means you are the best at every part of your industry.

Being the "best" and selling albums don't always go hand-in-hand.

Having a focus on one type of music doesn't negate or diminish excellence.

Agreed.

Nobody here even mentioned Phil Keaggy.

Check out these clips for great artistry. They are off the most beautiful acoustic album, "Beyond Nature".

"County Down"--&NR=1

"Addison's Walk"--

Firstly the edge is absolutely useless without his effects pedals and magical lighting.... Seriously he is... Anyone seen bill bailey's joke on a massive technical failure at a U2 concert.

check it

Also wheres Rory Gallagher on this list?.... Come on we named a street corner after him and mounted one of his guitars there.....

1) Paul Gilbert
2) Tony Macalpine
3) Joe Satriani

Those guys have Skill.

I think this list is based on how cool their songs are and/or how cool they look. I'm willing to bet that 75%+ of the voters dont even know how to play guitar. Classic Rock station? Yep, the voters ...[text shortened]... hose names on that list. I mean Eric Clapton, David Gilmore & Jimmy Page... Come ON!!!

🙂
In almost every survey that's been done about the greatest guitarist everyone always leaves Frank Marino off the list until someone said, "Hey, what about Frank Marino." Then he's added to the list.

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush

I think Robin Trower is better than many on that list.

Agreed, but if radio stations, the general public, etc, are going to make things like this into a contest,(although guitarists aren't really in a contest and probably don't care who is the best)then they should pick guitarists that play all forms of music,Tbone Walker was good at the blues,Hendrix and rock,Django Reinhardt, was great at jazz.No one really made different albums of different music.
Most of these contests are voted on by record buyers and radio station listeners most of those people don't have a clue as to how to play a guitar so what makes them experts opinions are fine but who is god enough to decide.Somewhere out there is a survey done buy actual guitarists, they are the ones that should decide.

Does it mean that for every one you 'enter' that I don't know, you are one point cooler than I am?

amazing how much debate this thread generated. to be fair, i think you'd have to break down the top 50 into genres and have 1st 2nd and 3rd places for artists in each.
ps i still say zappa is a great artist/composer/performer/ writer etc
but not a great guitarist, has anyone ever actually listened to his solos? 😛
