Below every post there are four blue underlined statements: Reply, Reply & Quote, Recommend, Alert Moderator.
This is the choice of actions that are open to you when you have read a post. If you like a post, you push the Rec button, and the poster will get a Rec. That is then added to the total that appears under his/her ID box. If you don't like a post, e.g. Alcra's, then you push Alert Moderator!
For example, when you have read this, press the Reply&Quote, then my box will come up again and you can tell all of us what your favourite subject for discussion is, and we'll take it from there!

i think i've said this before, but next time i'm in brighton i'll be sure to pop in and sample some of your fine fare - japanee food is my favourite food bar none.
one final point - this does seem to confirm a suspicion i've had for a while, which is that being inflammatory or outspoken is a good way to get lots of recs...
