yeah. USA was indeed very lucky. But what really amazed me was how badly Italy sucks. They couldnt score more than one goal against such a poor team as USA. Just amazing...
What comes to USA I have to wonder how Fifa let them even play? I guess USA players (two red cards) dont know the difference between soccer and american football.
All by all, pathetic performance...

This shows why the World Cup is the stupidest sporting event in history. A team which has scored one goal in two games only because one of its opponents knocked the ball into his own goal still has a chance to advance. Idiocy.
And they outplayed Italy for considerable parts of the game. They even kept attacking when they were down to 9 (although not in the last ten minutes, they kind of shut down and were playing with fire a bit). Landon Donovan was particularly outstanding.
One of the reasons soccer is so popular around the world is BECAUSE it is relatively low scoring, not in spite of it. It's what makes upsets and dramatic matches possible. There was a statistical analysis a little while before the World Cup that showed how a weaker team always has a chance because goals are inherently infrequent - whereas in higher-scoring sports, a generally inferior team is pretty unlikely to benefit from a 'purple patch'.
It certainly was an extraordinary game. I agree with the person who said the two straight reds were clearly deserved, but it's always a little unfortunate when someone gets a two-yellow red. The disallowing of the US goal was also correct in my view.
Apparently, a referee was sent prior to the World Cup to the Italian camp to specifically warn them that they wouldn't get away with some of the fouls that happen as a matter of course in Serie A. And then De Rossi decides to use an elbow to the face. Easily the most deserved sending off of the tournament.

In any case, the World Cup is a great tournament to follow. I'm going to miss it when it ends. Four years is a long time to wait for the next one.
