Vacation only for paying players?

Hello,

I think it's a bit silly that vacation is only for paying players. I just signed up to redhotpawn, travel a lot, will be away for the next week, and to be honest I'll play my games through if my opponents don't claim wins, but I won't hang around to see whether it's worth staying or if how the site develops. I need to be able to set vacations, and I know you want to offer premium features for subscribers, but I'm not going to consider that for a while yet. And I guess I won't get to that point :/

A pity, I like how the site is developing, I think you're doing a good job.

Yeah, I'm sure you need a break after those 15 grueling moves. 😕

So you travel a lot and as a result need to have the ability to set the vacation option.

Rather than staying in a hotel one night why not stay in a B&B?

The money saved pays the sub.

This has been discussed many times. For the record, a great many players agree with you. A lot of options could be considered, such as allowing five vacation days, just on the first membership year, to balance the playing field a little, and to make the site more friendly to those who might be eventual paying members.

Please realize that there are probably 500 or more thread posts on just this topic over the past two years.

Why don't you just play games with a 21/28 day timebank?

He'd burn down the site with the incredible move rate of 6 per month.
Bad idea

As one of the most active players on the site, I'll take up the cause this time to answer that one. A free member has only six games maximum. A 21/28 game is hardly attractive. The idea of allowing those six games is to make the site friendly and welcoming, with the benefits of being a paid member so obvious and worthwhile that they join with a paying subscription. Anything that provides that welcome and attraction, while not substantially detracting from the benefits of membership, makes sense. Allowing a few vacation days for the non-sub member makes sense.

Yes - paying for extra timebank cannot be justified in any way. 😞

Timeouts are not automatic,so you can message your opponents beforehand.I played a non-sub who did just that and we finished the games, but if you don't let them know you must expect to be timed-out.

Stop whining - no one cares if you stay or go.

Why should the site owners provide any more features or benefits for non-subscribers just because you can't pick suitable time controls for your games? If you made better use of the features already available to you then you wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

True. Most players wont time you out if you have a good reason for the delay, such as a vacation, and when you let them know in advance.

Plus, realize that you are playing for free. Resign the game and move on. Play new ones when you get back. Your rating will go right back to where it should be very quickly. All the rating does is give an indication of your relative rating strength.

An argument could be made that ratings shouldn't change at all with time outs. Having said that, please don't make it a real argument. I'm not actually suggesting it. I just want to point out that ratings aren't anything material, like money or any other prize value, except, possibly at the highest end of the scale where a few players have some serious bragging rights.
