I need to copy 3 sections out of a long avi file that I have.
I'll only have to do this the once, so I don't plan on paying for anything. Does anybody have any tips what software I could use to do this? Maybe a demo of a full program?
Cheers,

If you have a current version of Windows XP, they've added a nice little bit fo Software called "Microsoft MovieMaker." It may not be as great as other video editing programs, but I found it just perfect for AMV making. It doesn't have a steep learning curve, great for web friendly formats and it's a good start. Hey... it's not high end, but it's still a nice little program that comes bundled with Windows XP.

I try to use as few M$ applications as I can. Programs like their media player are some of the biggest examples of spyware you'll ever come across...http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,3995,00.asp is a mild enough sysnopsis.
Freeware products can often be riddled with adware and spyware, so be sure to read the terms and conditions on those. You might realise that you're reading the TOS for a different piece of software to what you think you're installing.
For that reason (amongst others), I search for opensource applications as much as possible. The online documentation is normally more impressive that anything else you could find without paying for it, and its normally more reliable, and definitely more ethical.
