Adair arms, that rings a bell. The organiser of the comp was Martin Donnely , i think. (could be wrong)

we drank the residents bar dry that saturday night 🙂
im sure the drink wasn't cheap, £1.50 a pint in a bar up the road on week nights 😀

the guy was wrong to say not to go outside, as long as you stay in the town centre there shouldn't be any problems. stray north or south - different problem 😞

how did you do in the comp?

i got royally ass whupped.
I was only a white sash, so i didnt expect anything else. I had only moved to Ireland six months earlier, and started Chinese boxing to help me out, in case i got jumped, or did that scottish mouthing off we're famous for. When the comp came up, i just did it to get away for a weekend, it was a great weekend all in all, And the republic took a few golds with them back to Dublin.
A lot of the foreign countries got stopped at heathrow because they had swords and other chinese weapons with them, and the airports were in a post 9/11 freakout.

edit. . .pint of beer in temple bar, dublin city. .5.60 euros (about £4) i do not kid you

i though it was the english who were famous for mouthing off 🙂

i can't remember the event being held but i'm sure i probably knew about it at the time, i play in a snooker team so buy the local paper to see the results, they talk about most sporting things going on so likely mentioned that.

the airport thing didn't last, they're back to their normal do whatever you like just don't made us do any extra work policy 🙂

yep. The upside is that the wages are better, which is enough to soften the blow of any polite sectarianism you encounter ( polite sectarianism-the kind where they dont kill you. i heard a belfast actor , steven rae, describe it as this).

yeah, i think its like london in that way it might be more expensive but the wages are higher go it sort of levels itself out a bit.

to be honest i've never really seen the sectarian side in dublin towards protestants, is it bad? its ok in cork everyone lives there live in relative peace, sometimes something would come up but i haven't heard anything in ages about it. i'm going down in july so will get to see then i suppose with my now ballymena accent 😞

Ireland is one of the most racist places in Europe (according to the Irish times). The sectarianism is under the surface, if you know anything about the dublin riots this year, when the friends of ulster tried to march down o'connel street, you would have seen it more out there.

Lets just say i pick and choose when, and to who, i reveal my religion.
Saying that, i have a lot of friends down here and its not as bad as i must be making it sound, but believe me, its there.

🙂

i don't have a religion (growing up hearing in the news "a man was shot today" every other day because of the parasite has made me really hate it.) but in ballymena i have to be very wary of where i go sometimes. wh ...[text shortened]... lfast better, i know people on both sides so its easy to move around without being bothered.

Thats one of the reasons theres fightin bud, Gerry Adams wouldn't even say that out loud.

But just so you know, Britain couldnt give the north to the republic, and the south don't want it. The republic cant police the 26 counties, theres no way it could police the other 6, and the 6 counties takes far more money than it gives back. . . fact.

😕
I read a while ago that the nationalists in Northern Ireland took to sporting Palestinian flags for some reason I can't remember, so in opposition to this some of the right wing Loyalists took to flying Israeli flags!
Perhaps someone could shed some more light on this, seeing as though it's just half remembered?

We'll all be 'Yanks' soon judging by the current crusade.

Back to the point of the thread, Polish fans are a bunch of nutters, there was a whole bunch of trouble at the end of their domestic season with pitch invasions and riots in the streets. Croatia too have been slapped on the wrists for qualifying games marred by crowd trouble. Mix these Eastern european fans with the Germans and some Dutch factions and there could be trouble on the horizon, especially if Germany play Holland at any point. It's a good job that Turkey didn't qualify really, that would have added another dimension. It's the innocents I feel sorry for, they're often the ones caught up in the violence and even arrested for just being there, pleading innocence doesn't normally work either.

England away don't have this problem anymore, not like 10-20 years ago, just over 3,000 fans have been banned from travelling and there was no trouble in Portugal two years ago, I think they've got a handle on it now.

6 hours to go, I cannot wait!!

i know all this, but england could give up the north - they waste more money than is given back. i think the republic would struggle with n.i for a few years but after that the economy would start growing (like it did in the republic) and the untied ireland would be able to run just as good (if not better) as the republic is today.

Thats one of the reasons theres fightin bud

the way it is at the moment nothing is ever going to change, make a united ireland sure a lot of people in the north and south wouldn't like it and there might be some trouble because of it, but it would be a lot better in 10 years than its going to be in 10 years now, so worth it i think.
