I read a while ago that the nationalists in Northern Ireland took to sporting Palestinian flags for some reason I can't remember, so in opposition to this some of the right wing Loyalists took to flying Israeli flags!
Perhaps someone could shed some more light on this, seeing as though it's just half remembered?
So, celtic fans would wave the Palestinian flag and rangers the israeli. Not many of them, though.
I think the connection with irish nationalism is that the Palestinians are seen as people who are also struggling for self-determination against a brutal occupier, just as irish nationalists see themselves.

I read today that the german police aren't so worried about trouble from the usual suspects at the world cup (I'll not specifically name England in case it is seen as beng partisan).
Instead, they are worried about far right groups from places like Poland.
Does this mean there is a danger of Germany being invaded by Polish nazis? How ironic is that!
If there is to be trouble involving England fans it will be in Nurumberg. They have a very large neo-nazi following and are extremely racist to boot. When they travel by rail, police with dogs attend the stations on route just incase the train stops!!!
I work for a german company and am in germany quite a lot. On the whole the german people are very friendly and are always interested in talking to visitor's. As with any place there are the odd few that are up for it but no-where near as many as some other european countries.
The other problem may come if they do stop people from entering the stadium who purchase tickets on the black market.
As we only got around 3000 official tickets per game (which has since increased slightly) and an estimated 20,000 will have tickets to get in, Refusing the 17,000 unofficial England fans entry may cause a slight problem!!!!! Personally, I think that 20,000 may be an UNDER estimate. After all there were around 35,000 at the Portugal England game in portugal and we only 8000 for that. And portugal were at home!!!!
Frankfurt holds 43,000, I would be supprised if there are less than 28,000 England fans in the ground. A mate and 7 of his mates have gone but only 2 have tickets.
I hope that there is no trouble as it would be a shame to spoil such a great competition due to violence. The police in England have been stopping anyone with a conviction for any form of violence from travelling.

i know all this, but england could give up the north - they waste more money than is given back. i think the republic would struggle with n.i for a few years but after that the economy would start growing (like it did in the republic) and the untied ireland would be able to run just as good (if not better) as the republic is today.
[b]Thats one of the re it would be a lot better in 10 years than its going to be in 10 years now, so worth it i think.
In no other country in the world would the Majority party in parliment be expectd to give half of its power to the losing party, if this was suggested in England that Labour should use the Conservatives to make up half the cabinet, they would be laughed out the place. Similarly i America, Israel, France, Only in hung parliaments like in Italy or The repiblic (funnily enough) would a coelition government even be thought of.
The Loyalists have been dragged kicking and screaming into stormont of late, and i think it is a tragedy how they have been treated.
The events of the North is proof that terrorism works, and demeocracy doesnt. Britain sold half of the Northern Irish parliament to the IRA in order for them to put down their guns, and when the Majority of the voting populatiion voted to slow down the process, the Brittish and Republic government began using bully boy tactics to keep the process moving. If this happened in Isreal, and they expected Hammas to power share in Tel Aviv. . . .well i dont think i need to go on.
I am not anti unity, but realisticaly it is not going to happen in the next 10 years. The wounds will take more time to heal, and i think they should be given that time, the people of the North are just happy for the ability to go to their town/City centres not fearing to be blown up, and if the process is rushed, i believe, violence will be the only prize.
this came up in bold ??? i never did that

They are the largest party, but that's quite different.
It is perfectly normal for the largest 2 parties to share power, especially given the 'special circumstances' in the 6 counties, where the parliament is seeking to represent 2 communities.
In Scotland, we have the largest party sharing power with the 4th party!

If the DUP chose a party to join with, do think it would be "Sinn fien/IRA" as they like to call them?
Not a hope in hell.
Would The Isrealli Labor party power share with Hamas?
Would the Labour party (UK) share with the Conservatives??
What you talk about is a "coalition" government, which i have already mentioned. In no western country is a coalition formed with the Direct opposition party, i thought you'd know that redmike.

And there are lots of coalition governments of 'opposites' - only last week the tories said they would support a coalition with labour in the scottish parliament.

Edit. In Scotland The Tories are not the Direct opposition, its The SNP, you know that.
