Okay guys/girls

Over the Christmas period (with a couple of free days), I'm looking at expanding my Music collection... I'm pretty set on the mainstream metal front (yes I have all the Metallica and Iron Maiden albums !!) but am short for bands like Warmen, Chinchilla etc.

I also looking for decent goth music ...

Any ideas are welcome

Thanks
Boris

Not sure if you're new to goth music, or if you are just looking to expand you collection, so pardon me if I'm telling you what you already know. I've always thought goth originated out of a mixture of new romantic and harder rock around at the time. Bands like The Cure are obvious links between the two genres. In the mid-late 90's the movement seemed to get harder, less moping, more anger, although for me being a goth was all about being misunderstood and being insular, not lashing out. Anyway, each to his own. There seems to be a thin line these days between heavy rock and goth in some circles so it is a ot harder than you might think to provide some decent artists you might like. One man's goth is another man's hevay metal 🙂 So here's a list of someo of the stuff I liked when I was heavily into goth, these days I've become happier and developed a less insular life so I don't listen to it as much as I used to, go figure.

Anyway here's some of the music I listen to, some of it is obviously not goth, but I reckon it's still the right feeling, many will disagree:

Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Cure, Sixth Comm, Joy Division, Tones on Tail, Nick Cave, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Shock Therapy, No more, Mekons, Fair Sex, Sisterhood, James Ray, Tori Amos, The Mission, Radiohead.

Just decided this isn't actually much help, it's been a long time and I lost me tape collection many years ago to an irate girlfriend. Maybe you'll find something of interest amongst this lot, maybe not 🙂

I always think of Bauhaus when I think of gothic music.
'Bela Lugosi's dead' is one of my favourite songs.

Metal? mhmmm....
Not exactly metal, but AC/DC's: 'If you want blood, you've got it' is pretty awesome.

Pre-metal? Get a live album by Janis Joplin or Hendrix.
Or alternatively dive into the Velvet Underground. You'll never need to come out again!

Ozzy Osbourne made an album in the early 80's called: "The Randy Roads tribute" or something. It's a live album and very good (some great versions of Sabbath songs on it).

But...if you're really into metal, the album to have is: Bad News.
It's by the same guys from the Yong Ones and it's an excellent piss-take on the metal scene.
Their version of Bohemian Rhapsody will be the centre piece of any birthday party.

Led Zepplin - I have
Jethro Tull - I'll have a look, sounds good
AC/DC - I have (all !!)
Ozzy - I have
Bauhaus - I'll have a look (never heard, but then I'm quite new to goth music !!)

Regards Gothic

I like Nightwish, Paradise Lost (a bit slow, but great music), Evanescence (don't bloody laugh, they're not too bad - just listen to their Ultra Rare traxx !!) ... I don't mind slower Gothic music as long as it has some powerful passages in it ...

Fields of the Nephilim, Cure, Sixth Comm, Joy Division, Tones on Tail, Nick Cave, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Shock Therapy, No more, Mekons, Fair Sex, Sisterhood, James Ray, The Mission ... Starrman, any chances you could recommend any of them (preferably the faster ones ?)

Thanks guys, keep it going, I'll feedback once I've got a few 'new' albums

Check out "Within Temptation" Boris, a great Dutch Gothic band. You will need to get used a bit of the singers voice, but after a while you will start to love it.

I also want to add this was a joke! Jethro Tull is good, and they won an award in the mid 90's for being the 'best Metal band'.

They are not metal, but they are good music.

Hope you enjoy.

I don't know if this band is considered punk or heavy metal, but the Scotch Greens kick a$$. My favorite is a song called Drink, Smoke and Fish or maybe Hot as Texas.

Gee... Now that you're saying it I remember that they snatched Metallica's award one year and Lars made some very sarcastic comments when they won it for the black album ... Oh well, it's downloaded now, I'll have a listen later

Also check out Flogging Molly, not truly Heavy Metal, but when I saw them on the Warped tour they rocked the house.

Ever tried Ministry. Maybe a bit off-metal, but damn good. I like Rage against the Machine, but maybe again a bit off-metal.

If you like Rage, check out Richard Cheese's Lounge Against the Machine. He does a great version of Guerilla Radio. You could probably get away with calling RAtM heavy metal.

Mastodon's "Leviathan";
The Blood Brothers' "Burn, Piano Island, Burn"; and
The Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton's "Irony is a Dead Scene EP"

These are three metal albums that kick my ass everytime I listen to them. Highly recommended!
