I'll start this thread out. If you know of any hazards that can occur during everyday life please post them here.

Air Freshener PlugIns Fire Hazard!

This was received from a friend in the home insurance business. It is well worth reading. This is one of those emails that if you didn't send it, rest assured someone on your list will suffer for not reading it.

The original message was written by a lady whose brother and his wife
learned a hard lesson this past week. Their house burned down....nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the home will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news.

However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The
insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked the
sister-in-law what she had plugged in the bathroom. She listed the normal things....curling iron, blow dryer.

He kept saying to her, "No, it was something that would disintegrate at high temperatures". Then the sister-in- law remembered she had a Glade Plug-In in the bathroom. The investigator had one of those "Aha" moments.

He said that was the cause of the fire and that he has seen more home fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the plastic for these is a THIN plastic. He also said that in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed.

When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there. The sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again. The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would come on. That is a warning sign.

The investigator said he personally wouldn't have any type of plug-in
fragrance device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many homes that have been burned down due to them.

I guess it's better to post here than forwarding it to everyone in on email and jamming exchange servers across the globe.

My only advice is don't put your fingers near the cats mouth - he may bite, as was experienced by me just now...

Neutradol is much better than Glade btw (and not a plug-in) 😉

And u know whats even better.

Aromatherapy diffusers. You can change the smell on a daily basis and its 100% natural, so no cancerous toxins floating around the place.

Somebody told me that you have to be careful with home cleaning products. I guess you can't mix certain chemicals w/o causing a serious problem, but I don't know what they are... does anybody know?

Bleach and Ammonia are very bad together:

'When bleach and ammonia are combined, they create a gas called chloramine. When inhaled, this gas releases ammonia, hydrochloric acid, and oxygen free radicals in the lungs. Small amounts of chloramine may cause mild irritation, but it can corrode the tissues of the lung and damage the cells. This can result in inflammation of the lung tissues and build-up of fluids that can obstruct the airways, and can lead in severe cases to death.'

It doesn't take much of either to create enough to fill a room. Never ever mix them.
I've heard stories about urinating into a freshly bleached toilet causing enough of a reaction to knock someone out but I don't know how likely that is.

slightly off topic, but I believe chlorine and motor oil.
Do not keep your pool chlorine in the garage.

In all seriousness, one of my cats recently urinated in one of the
cat boxes, but I had been cleaning it and it had no litter in it.

So, I figured I'd clean out this box with only cat urine in it. I poured
some bleach in the box (to sterilize it) and BLAMO! We are talking
some serious fumes -- and FAST!

I guess cat urine has ammonia in it or something... but I am telling
you; DON'T EVER MIX CAT URINE AND BLEACH. It was dangerous!

Human urine also contains ammonia in the form of urea.
