What are your best set-pieces-plays? When I want a funny game, with a little bit of strange moves, I create a new board with the "set pieces" function. For example, I'm playing a double-horsed game versus Buddy Revell (game #930207). I know my opponent had created a double-bishoped game (#930205). I have also a "Pawns attack!" on run (#931539). What are yours?🙄

i used to play games were you and your oponent could not see the board and only a third party moved for either. he never told you your oponents move, but only if you could not move yours.

A great set-up game is tro put Bishops on knight squares and vice-versa... You might not think it would make all that much of a difference but try it and see...

Another game we used to play when in college is Atomic Chess... It's mad. Same rules as chess except when capturing. When you capture the piece you capture leaves the board, so does the piece which did the capture AND so does every piece within one square in any direction of the ATOMIC capture. Nuts. Very fast games. No mates ever. All you need do is take a piece close to the king to win...

I used to love Monster Chess. Black takes only 5 pawns and a King against White's entire army, but gets to make two moves for each time. The rules are Black can move in and out of check, so the King can capture a protected piece as long as his 2nd move takes him out of check. It's a very fun game!

Or another one we tried when up late was Old Chess...
Pawns can only move one square
Knight move same
Bishop move either 1 or 2 squares max
Rook move either 1 or 2 squares max
Queen moves 1 square any direction
King move same
No Castling
Great fun... Weird to try to get head around new order of pieces i.e Knight strongest, then Rook, Bishop and lastly Queen. And of course King can kick ass in the middle of the action...

A mate of mine was in Army intelligence and they had an intresting version. It was played via a third party, in this case a computer, and you could only see the opponents pieces if they were threatening a piece or you were threatening them, sounds like fun.

just set up a chess960 game - come on in.

EDIT: non-legal normal chess moves are not available - sorry. IE no castling as the chess960 rules are different and RHP does not support them.

www.itsyourturn.com has loads of varieties of chess. I never play there anymore, because I spend all my time here, but I loved Horde Chess. Normal White setup vs Black with 4 ranks of pawns. Black wins by mate as usual, while White wins by capturing all of Black's pieces.

I think I will probabely test such funny games ("full-horsed" and "full-bishoped&quot😉. Great idea! Does somebody have played a "full-rooked" game? Or a "something diagonaly wiked" ? Lets challenge on open games!
