Say look...

I used to be a proud American, but now I am a broken citizen...
The congressmen and senators have passed laws for big business that has had the effect of destroying America and the middle class workers. 😳

So I want to leave this god forsaken country and retire somewhere else in the world. (Keep in mind, I don't want to retire in a country that Bush & his cronies are going to start a war in!)

But seriously, Bush and the Repuplicans have destroyed the middle class Americans. We will all be without a job, food, even shelter within a few years, so I need to know where I can move to in order to retire. My retirement won't be much, since the Republicans have destroyed my automotive company... and I won't get much of my earned social security, since Bush and the Republicans are in the process of taking that away from all of us, but I'll have to make due with whatever I can. 😕

Can anyone help me (and a few million other Americans) with this information?

Well, if you are ever truly down on your luck I suggest working in the lodging industry. No matter how down and out the economy gets, the world shall always need hotels and restaurants, and I don't care much for restaurant work. 😉

Seriously though, I suppose it depends a lot on what your resources are and what kind of lifestyle you want to have.

Example: I simply want to live in a log cabin atleast 20 miles from any thing which could be called civilization. Live of the land for the better part, and make jaunts into the civilized world for recreation (such as chess). Subequently, I need a fairly decent financial resource to start with, but after that only a small amount of income.

So, to answer your question fairly I would have to know what kind of lifestyle would be suitable to you. 🙂

My retirement plan is to die by the time I'm 65. Maybe I'd better make it 60 just to be on the safe side.

Don't move to The Netherlands! In 30 or 40 years it will be one big city filled with buildings and roads without any room to move around or experience a quiet ease in the remains of nature, if some remains. It is hard nowadays, it will be impossible in the next few decades. i am heading to Northern Canada or Australia myself at that time, probably. Or northern Norway.

Due to an aging population the UK is facing a pensions timebomb. Early in Blairs third term ( assuming he wins ) he will scrap final salary pensions in the public sector replacing it with a lower average salary scheme.
Todays taxpayers fund todays pensioners, have to pay for their own pension plans, and are now expected to save for the next generations education. Still it could be worse and probably will be by the time I retire.
I need a drink!

New Zealand is a great country, although it is led by the Green Party, which will probably be one of america's first targets in its expanded war on terror, AKA war on any country which disagrees with the u.s.' policies of economy before environment, ethics and humanity.

Ireland is supposed to be the best country in the world to live in, but the weather sucks, and despite irish big business waving american flags everywhere, american's aren't viewed too favourably by the general public in light of the fact that american's are holidaying in Ireland on the back of the misery of others. You could go around wearing a Maple Leaf on your jacket though. 😉

Argentina is a great place. Great food, great people, and great country. Also, if you need your pension to stretch, Argentina is fantastic after the World Bank engineered collapse of the peso in 2000.

Thailand is my dream retirement destination, along with Australia/New Zealand. Hopefully, I'll be living the dream in about another 5-6 years. Fingers crossed anyway.

Best of luck,

D

when i was younger i knew some people who took hard drugs ... it looked silly:

healthy youth acting like geriatrics.

i decided not to take those drugs ... and leave it til i got really old and decrepit.

maybe when i am too old to live, i will become a junkie 😀

i spose i will have to give all my money to my son first, so i don't waste it all.

You have the luck, Arrakis. I retire in about 33 years time, by which time we will all live in the USA or one of its colonies ( not sure if that should be followed by 😀 😠 or 😴 ).

Perhaps the question is "what plans are we making prior to retirement to facilitate our retiring the way we want?"

The art is to have the choice or not to retire and/or to work when you want to.

I retired once about 4 years ago - then I got bored so I started up another company - which I intend to sell in the next year or so, then sit on a beach somehwere for a year or so before trying something else....

Stopping working is not all it is cracked up to be, but to have the feedom of when and what to work at, and to be your own boss when you do, is very much the aim to have!!

I realize my post may have mislead many of you into thinking that I am down and out... Nah, I've got 100 G's put away, but I don't want to retire HERE (in the US). So what I was trying to find out was where is a good place in the world for people with a few bucks and a $4000/month retirement to retire?
