What an interesting post! How many other activities bring together people from all continents, socioeconomic classes, linguistic backgrounds, work experiences, etc.? Doesn't matter who you are, where you are, what you do for a living, what language you speak, what age you are, we can all appreciate the beauty of a great chess game. And we all empathize with the horrific blunder in a won position.

I don't really have a profession, although I've done stuff ranging from metal worker to nearly finished computer science MSc. mark adkin's situation on page 2 is very close to mine, except that I'm about ten years younger. 🙂
