What is a “true” atheist?

It seems to me that a true atheist is one who is born and dies in the state of lacking belief in a deity. someone who becomes a theist at any point is simply a theist; it doesn’t matter whether conversion happens on his deathbed or decades before.

Once upon a time I expressed the view in SF that if you were truly an atheist you would be absolutely persuaded that your final seconds were your final seconds. As such I believe it wouldn't matter to you what thoughts went through your mind or were expressed by you, as long as they got you through the process of dying. As such apparent deathbed conversion could be a phenomenon within true atheism.

Arguing that it was reasonable to express this view resulted in pages of trolling and indeed that was the reason this thread was started, since Dive holds the belief it is evidence of some deep seated character flaw.

I will not discuss this further in a public site, since I was in part making sense of the recent death of my father in that post, but feel free to PM if you would like to discuss this further.

The 'true atheist is one who becomes a theist before he or she dies' theory would be somewhat akin to saying 'the true Christian is one who becomes an atheist just before he or she dies'. These are not the sorts of things I would be doubling down on, nor would I be lashing out at those advising me not to double down.
