The original ( The thing from another world ) was loosely based on John Cambell's novel " Who goes there" and was in B&W and is now generally acclaimed as a 'classic' (James Arness played the monster) but Carpenter's remake is more of a sequel as it picks up after the entity has had its way with the original occupants of the base.Nothing is lost in this continuation of Howard Hawk's horror / thriller. Kurt Russell and Richard Dysart's performances were superb.
It's quite all right, I let Thor have all the thunder anyway. Do you prefer the original or the remake better?

Originally posted by skeeterlol I have read the original story, and own both of the movies, I think in the b/w the alien was portrayed more as a walking vegetable, which is kind of funny. The newer version scared me though, so I have to give it credit, in fact it was'nt untill I saw the original that I realized the new version has no women in it, making it very singular in my movie collection. Also to my understanding John Campbell was an editor, and had wrote the story as an example of what he expected of his writers, for short sci-fi.

The original SHINING with Jack Nickolson is SCARY, one not mentioned so far is Salem's Lot with Max Von Sydow JESUS when he jumps through the kitchen window, and the wee boy scratching on the window. I blame my parents, they encouraged me to read from an early age and I had to watch for comparison sake. The original Ring Japanese with subtitles caused a renewal of under wear and I am waiting for the book to arrive........DONT PHONE ME!!!!!!!!!
