Because racism is an evil archiac notion of hate that STILL persists in modern day football. FIFA have been absolutely pathetic in their efforts to erase it from the game (incidents in Spain, always incidents in the Balkans), and to let it pass between PROFESSIONALS at the HIGHEST possible level would be a disgrace.

I'm not sure. I think perhaps this racism thing has got out of hand. But that's another argument. The fact is that he insulted him. These are people who supposed to be operating on a professional level, and should not resort to such things. If I was working in an office and I started calling, let's say someone who had shown interest in the same promotional ...[text shortened]... myself, a T*** or whatever, should I not be disciplined for calling them?
I think I should.
In your example, do you think the professional response is to head butt your colleague in the chest or to talk to your boss?
If Zidane felt insulted, even racially, he should bring it up with the officials. That's why I say it is utterly irrelevant what was said.

What was said to Zidane... This is a disgrace - FIFA need to actually do something for a change. You can't have players making slurs like that against a fellow pro.
From Soccernet; Since Sunday evening the whole World has been debating what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said to Zinedine Zidane to make the retiring Frenchman react in the way he did. ...[text shortened]... h for Man City now" It's at this very point Zidane turned and head-butted him.

2: No I don't think the players should carry around tape recorders, but if unproffessional conduct is noticed by officials, then it should be dealt with.
3: See point 1.

3) It doesn't excuse Zidane which is what the thread is about.

2: It has come to light, in the media, after the game. If it was noticed by the officials during the game, then I'm sure that they would have acted appropriately. ie, carding or warning. But it wasn't. Nonetheless, FIFA are now aware of this proffessional's behaviour now, and are well within their rights to take action against him. It's not the first time that such a thing has been acted on in these circumstances.
3: I never argued that Zidane was within his rights to resort to violence. I think that both the idiots were, well, idiots.
