No professional should ever say that to another player, it is taking banter too far. I agree with those that say Matta should have the book thrown at him for that.
I heard it was Spurs which would have been even worse of course.

Where did you find these quotes? What's the evidence that Materazzi these racist things? Materazzi admits insulting Zidane-- but he denies saying anything about Muslim or terrorism. Zidane (as far as I know) has not said that Materazzi made racist remarks. Various lipreaders have interpreted the comments various ways, but I have yet to see this exact ve ...[text shortened]... g accusations of racism and treating them as matters of fact.
Let's see the source, now.
You could argue it's one players word against another's, but consider the context - billions of people saw Zidane very suddenly turn in reaction to something that was said and perform the now infamous headbutt.
So given what we all observed, who are you going to believe - the person that says the comment was mild but won't say what it was, or the one that says it was disgusting and unrepeatable?
We where not there at the moment prior to the head butting therefore we will never know the true reason behind this occurrence. I know should someone speak to me in such away at just the right time and place in such away I might very well loose my temper and start whooping on them. I dare those who say they would never to ask themselves to think and I am absolutely sure they will be able to remember at last once already in there own life a time similar to this instance.
Originally posted by orfeoAre you referring to the interviews Zidane gave yesterday for French TV? I am quite familiar with those. Unless there's something in there I haven't seen, in them Zidane said that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister, but said nothing about Materazzi's making racist comments. He certainly did not claim that Materazzi said the words Derfel posted.

Derfel stated as fact that Materazzi made certain, specific. racist remarks. I'm waiting for him to back that up with a citation.

Actually one of the American commentators actually referred to Materazzi as "Maserati" at one point during the final game (right after Italy's goal, I think).
Mattresses should be horizontal. Can't sleep or jump up and down on them otherwise, can we?
Originally posted by ElleEffSeeeAgreed. This is now in the open, it's important that people should know about this, if it was a racist comment, when FIFA is trying to eradicate racism among football fans; this reflects very badly on the Italian player.
Wrong - if it's racist it should be highlighted and Matty be made an example of.
Some say that Zidane should have kept cool and not reacted the way he did, as a professional football player whom many young people look up to etc . . . but he's only human.
Originally posted by WheelyI'm actually all for head-butting idiots during football matches. If they can't learn by manners, then they should learn by pain incentives.
Yeah, I like this idea. Let's blame Materazzi for getting head butted in the chest.
It is not in the slightest bit relevant what was said between the two of them. It was not out in the street, it was not in the privacy of their own homes it was on the world stage with two billion people watching. Professionals behave as such, not like brawling children.

Italian. Zidane speak the language as he played for Juve for some years.
All I'd say is that Zidane grew up in Marseilles and must have heard much worse. There may be no excuse for what Materazzi said, but there is no excuse for Zidane's behaviour either.
Jesus, grow the hell up the pair of you.

Some kind of, "I'll show you how wrong you are!" response. Why can't people just be secure in the fact that they are right and the other person is a retard? Why do people always have to be dishing out verdicts on someone else's behavior? Someone says something stupid, WHO CARES!!!! They say stupid things because they ARE STUPID. Leave it at that.

It's about time we humans moved beyond our basic biological instincts and started using our brains for something other than to fill the space behind our eyeballs.
Originally posted by uzlessI'm not justifying his actions, I think Zidane should have risen above that idiot. He has apologised in the press for this by the way.

There was a great deal of pressure from the French public; there are many social and racial problems in France at the moment and a win by a very multi-cultural French team may have helped heal some of the divides. I don't think any of this has come accross in the foreign press . . . The pressure on the french team was amost tangible.
I'm trying to understand what happened, not justyfing it.
Do you never lose it? Are you so stoical you never let things get to you?
