..if you have both bishops they are equal to 3 and half each...lose
one bishop and it is then only valued at 3....both knights still only
equal 3...this is modern chess thinking....please buy my book...

The best piece is the one that works best in the given position. Sometimes a knight is better than a rook, and in the position below, with white on move, a rook is better than a queen.

the best piece is the king.

The King is not white's best friend here.

without your king you have your worst result.

Why not just move the king over one, then promote? That will avoid the ensuing run-around.
If you get a rook the black king is forced into mate the next move. That, besides the stalemate, is why the rook is better there.

I have a funny feeling that you already knew that...

the knight is able to win the game over the bishop ... (it also has an extra pawn to help it ...._)

however ....

note very carefully that the player using the bishop won the tournament !!!!!

quirine was eliminated from the tournament because of this game ... where quirines knight was unable to do the job required of it ... Game 759504 while the enemy bishop was very happy and busy.

The pieces' values are relative to the position being played:

- For Open Positions, Bishops are worth more;
- For Closed Positions, Knights are worth more.

i do not like to see it this way ...

i think the best was mentioned before ...

knights work well with pawns in the centre, and not on the sides ... and bishops work well with an open centre and pawns on the wings.

bishops also are very worried about their own pawns being on the same colour as themselves ... and sometimes about the colour of the enemy pawns.

the concept of "open" and "closed" is not as clear ...

at the start the bishops form a pair raking the whole board ... this counterbalances the horsies pawnhopping powers.

i guess that depends on the level of your opponent? your opponents always keep your horses covered. the game changes at different levels of play.

I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on the bishop and knight, regarding which is the better piece.

Would I be right in assuming bishop's are worth 3 points and knights are two points?
wouldnt this run through fritz or similar give you the answer you require?

Because the position is against the rules of chess, Fritz refuses to give it a look.

Okay then, anyone fancy a game using the set piece above, to prove once and for all which are best.

Ps. I want to be the little horsey things.
