My answer is NO !

Of course rather than arguing about it we could wait a few days and see if he does or not.

This is a thread in the General forum. Arguing is not what I had in mind. Fun is what I had in mind. 😀

The answer is NO. No longer possible. Not after South Africa won the 4x100m Men's freestyle. And broke the world record.

Phelps, who won his first gold medal Saturday in the 400 individual medley, will need to win his four remaining individual events and help the USA to victory in the two remaining relays, the 4x200 freestyle and the 4x100 medley, to tie Spitz(world record holder).
It doen't look good Ivanhoe, but I hope your right.

Weeks ago I saw all the hype about Phelps and thought "Um, have they not noticed there's at least one other swimmer who's really rather good in a large number of events?" A *lot* of hype for someone who didn't actually have a track record from previous Olympics behind him, like Thorpe or indeed van Hoogenband.

Bronze. I mean, most people would be THRILLED with that. But after such high expectations the only way was down.

The name Hoogenband is quite badass, but not to the extent that Pieter should be allowed to have a honey badger tattoo. By the same token, I'd imagine that Pieter van den Hoogenband could outswim all but the most eager BHB.

i just found out that phelps swam his best time in the final of freestyle and still came third.

now i really do not understand what the hype was about in relation to spitz's record.

heros are played by the media for what they are thought to be worth - not necessarily the same as what they are capable of ... and phelps has been overestimated - but it made money in the usa media.

thorpe has been relaxing between olympics and swims his best again - many people expected this 4 years ago.

i personally expect regular drug cheating by australian sports stars - but thorpe might be different - he has some big flipper feet going there.
