Does IE 6.0 work properly on Win98?

I installed it and my yahoo account won't work properly. The webpage doesn't look the same, the background is plain white and the buttons dont' work, reply, compose etc...

Even my university secure e-mail site won't open. But with internet 5.0 everything is fine but I can't watch aol.com music videos.

What is my problem?

I want to install ME or Xp but I don't know what to do about drivers?

This person at work said with recent computers you need to download drivers. I use to just stick the windows cd in and let it do all the work. Even with my other computer I just stuck in the ME Cd and after 1 hour it was ready to go. I don't know about downloading drivers and stuff.

If you have something really obscure then you might need a driver CD (which should have come with the device). 99% of devices will be supported out of the box by XP.
One of the major problems with IE is that it doesn't conform to various display standards so there is no telling how a site will display on it. The other is that it's full of security holes.

As for AOL let's just say that their privacy policy and service are shockingly bad. Recently they released logs of their search engine that contained credit card numbers, social security numbers with attached names and various other personal information.

He also said he wants to install ME, a big mistake. My buddy Leboeuf, whom you are playing now, used to have a comp with ME and somehow the windows updated automatically but got the order of the update screwed up and jumped ahead one set, missing an itermediary. Killed the computer. Had to format the HD and install XP which, while reviled, was light years ahead of ME.

IE6 is compatible with win98,you should have no problems running it.

If it's "secure sites" causing the problem, try going to Tools /Internet Options/ Security.
Change each zone to default, see if that helps.

I think he was talking about the computer itself.

I had a ancient 233 Mhz 3 months ago πŸ™ then moved up to 350 Mhz last month and then I was given a 733 MHz computer which was going to recycle.

The 733 Mhz is P3 and I believe that's is what he was talking abotu when he said recent.

Thank for the advice. I will save the drivers which he istalled when he gave me the computer just in case and then put in Xp and see what happens.

As for AOL, I just like watching the music videos every now and then.

I have ME for sure but Xp i'm not to sure. I could probably get it. I hear ME is bad for my purposes it has been fine. I'm not to picky.

I tried changing the security settings. It seems that Yahoo would open up the beta page for some reason and most of the buttons wouldn't work and the page would be all white, no colors with Bold letters.

wohou! πŸ˜€ going oldskool, eh? πŸ™‚

winxp would be a lot better than 98 in various ways, but your hardware might be a bit dated for that? there's nothing hard with the drivers though, if you need something obscure that isn't already in the huge driver banks of xp, you just go fetch it from the manufacturer's site. that said, all my legacy hw have had much better luck with xp drivers than former windows systems. the only exception might be aspi-layer, which ms in its infinite wisdom removed after 98. :-/ takes a little tinkering that one, but otherwise everything is much more functional.

some linux would probably run quite happily on your puny machines, but you don't seem like the type who wants to tinker with the os to get things done.

Another reason to upgrade from 98
"From 11 July, Microsoft no longer help users over the phone with any problems they have with the ageing operating system. They have also stopped providing security updates for Windows 98 from the same date".
