Okay ... another week-end another computer problem ...

This time it seems that my Windows explorer is using my resources like there is no tomorrow (average CPU usage - 90-100%, mem usage 100,000-180,000 K)

I'm running Windows XP Professional (all updates installed) and have run ad-aware and spy bot ... I've 'end process' in the task manager and run a new explorer ... Same result ... My computer feels like a Pentium 1 at the moment -

Any ideas ?? Thanks

Boris

It's the ghost of Rock-past haunting your machine dude.
Because you are a metallica supporter your computer is rigging itself in a HAL-like fashion, to prevent you from stealing inferior music to the God's you adore.

You better format it before it starts singing: "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two"

Anyone who runs WinXP should be made aware that Microsoft included several programs in the operating system to service 3rd party software vendors!!! Yeah, they didn't design the program for it's paying users... they designed the program to allow 3rd party hackers to be able to access your computer!

If you are running WinXp and want security and do not want Microsoft's background programs to allow 3rd party vendors to access your computer, I suggest you do this:

Go into START
...MY COMPUTER
...ADMINISTRATION TOOLS
...COMPONENT SERVICES
...SERVICES

and then click on each of these components and DISABLE them!

* Application Layer Gateway
* ClipBook
* Computer Browser
* Creative Service for CDRom Access
* Messenger
* NET Meeting
* Network DDE
* Network DDE DSDM
* Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
* Routing and Remote Access

Special note... if you have networked your computers together at home then you cannot use the above suggestion. Also, if you use the Messenger prgram then you can't disable some of the above features.

It took me a year to find out what programs I needed to SHUT DOWN to stop 3rd party software from infiltrating my computer. I can not say that my setting will work for your purposes... but what I recommend is that you try them and turn on whatever features you need to run.

Cheers,
arrakis

Thanks very much Arrakis,

I've made all the changes you indicated - Hope that will improve system performance yet once again -

Again, thanks very much

You know when you play some records backwards you get Satanic messages or "Paul's dead." like messages?
When you play a Metallica record backwards...it just sounds better...

I should have mentioned that it's also important to run an anti-spyware program. Type Spybot into google and you'll find spybot's home site where you can d/l it and install it. I believe the latest version is 1.3 If you haven't run a program like this then you are in for a big surprize. You'll find over 30 spyware programs running on your computer in the background. I recommend letting Spybot remove or kill anything it finds. For some people that means their daily weather program won't run anymore... that's cause it was spying on you and sending the information to a 3rd party!

Cheers
