I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem.
I have a belkin hi speed hub and when I try to start my external hard drive using it windows does not recognize it. I plug the external hard drive into my computer usb port and it goes no problem but i get the message that a hi speed hub would be better. After about a half a hour I plug my usb for the external hard drive into the hub and it works ok until the next day when the same thing happens. Any help would be great. All the ports in the hub work ok.
I am using a new computer, got vista this time instead of XP, external drive is FAT32 whereas my hard drive on new computer is NTFS.
Sorry for posting this here but have tried other places to no avail.

Hubs, extension cables etc. aren't a good idea with external HDDs. USB connections aren't perfect as they are designed to plug and unplug easily. If you MUST use the hub, because you don't have enough ports for printers, mouse etc. plug them into the hub and try to plug your hard drive directly into the PC.
The message you're getting probably has nothing to do with a high speed hub though. Are you sure the message is not along the lines "plug this device into a high speed PORT". You get this message when plugging a USB2 capable device into a USB1.1 port.
Your high speed bus is useless, meaning it will run t USB1 speeds if you plug it into a USB1 port.

It works ok after the USB lead from the external hard drive is plugged into the hub after about half a hour plugged into the computer.
Seriously, do you NEED to plug it into the hub? Why? If the hub acts as an extension, rather get a longer cable for the drive.

This is REALLY weird. It shouldn't make a difference - the USB bus speed can't be 'boosted' by using a hub. If anything I would expect a slight minimal performance hit.

I was going to tell you that I once heard that the USB ports on the front of the computer are slower than the USB ports on the back. I don't know if that is really true or not but I plug all my important stuff into the back USB ports.
🙂

I've found the front ports are usually the ones that 'break' first, as they usually get used most, so the plugs themselves deteriorate.
