I just watched the movie, Hero, and I have to say it is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The story, the acting, the action, the cinematography, the use of colours, the music, the choreography, the scenery, everything, was just fantastic.
Anybody else enjoy it?

Although different in many ways, have you seen House of Flying Daggers? I'd choose to watch Hero over HoFD if I had to see only one, but if you liked Hero you may well enjoy HoFD too.
I thought it was dull, take away the cinematography (which was totally reliant on colour) and all you have is a poor man's Crouching Tiger. The acting was below par, the scene editing was badly put together and the story line was erratic and poorly finished. My Chinese friend also says the translations are appalling, which may account for some of the surreal points in the story. Overall, I thought it was visually pretty good, but obviously riding the band wagon of the recent success of CTHD and coming up short. 6/10

The story(s) was brillant and the spirituallity of the characters excellently portrayed. None of the main characters ever took any action lightly, with loads of 20 sec+ pauses, where they contemplated the action they were going to take. The emotion that he was able to portray through his characters (and clever use of colour and music and action/dance) was exceptional.
The setpieces, were as good as a lot of things in LOTR, although admittedly the special effects were nowhere near as good.
I was gobsmacked. I can't agree with any of your comments, Starrman. Sorry. 🙂

Everything you have said was a good point, I would say was a bad one. Those pauses were so cliched I started cringing whilst watching it, truly poor. The spirituality you talk of is just random 'ooh lets throw in some moodiness and hope it passes as mystical', but in fact acheive nothing in terms of clarity or realisation. The acting is as hammy as the originaly chinese kung fu movies of the 60s & 70s but lacks any of the character and honestly by the end of the film I was utterly lacklustre about it.
I'm a big Chinese movie fan, I used to watch all sorts of wierd imports my mate at college brought in, things like 'Saviour of the Soul' and God of Gambles and all I thought about Hero was that it was a bad accumulation of bits of loads of other films made glossy with a decent paintbox. Sorry, no where near the film CTHD was in my opinion. 🙂
Originally posted by RagnorakI absolutely loved Hero. I liked CTHD too, but mainly just as a very good movie. You know, good acting, interesting plot, spectacular and surprising martial arts, etc.. Maybe it's a bit better then Hero on those aspects, but I adored the cinematography of Hero and left the theater feeling I just saw something I think is beautiful. That happens a lot less then seeing a good movie.
Anybody else care to comment on this movie?
