Haven't heard this one before.

Yes, the chicken of the egg definitely came first.
What came second?

The Chicken.

A chicken egg must come from a chicken in order for it to be a chicken's egg. But a chicken doesn't have to come from a chicken egg because the egg could could be the egg of an ancient chicken, which is not defined "Chicken" as our modern chicken. So our modern chicken could be the mutation of an earlier chicken, and therefore it came before the egg.

He didn't ask whether the chicken or the chicken egg came first. He asked if the chicken or the egg came first.

Just a matter of definition.
If you define a "chicken egg" as an egg "containing a chicken" instead of "produced by a chicken", the egg should be first.

The egg. In one form or another....whether it was a dried, crusty blob of mud..... a cooled bubble in some volcanic stone...............

Such is my opinion anyhow.

it depends.

If the egg is male and the chicken female, and the egg is a gentleman, then the chicken came first, otherwise the egg did.

If the genders are reversed, reverse the above.

Of course the egg came first. Eggs have been a roudn much longer than chickens have, and only did the first chicken hatch from an egg.

Can you define a chicken-egg? Is it an egg from which a chicken hatches, or an egg which a chicken laid, or both?
