I always need to laugh at the people who don't know the definition of sport.
Chess is a sport by definition... it's popular enough for 'sports enthusiasts' to enjoy it. Chess is an art, recreation, etc... but when you put it at a level of competition it becomes a very valid sport.
It's not athletics, but a sport. Poker is a sport, but not one I'm interested in. Bowling is a sport... many things are sport by definition, but chess is better than watching people play Parcheesi or Monopoly.
Chess is not athletics... many things by definition are sport... Chess is a valid enough game I feel to drop in the category of sports worth following when you see it on your sports channel or in the sports section of the paper.

I have never seen Monopoly covered on ESPN or in the sports pages... but I am SURE the fights are more intense!
