Game 3610204 Emlasker vs Iluphade 1/2-1/2
I thought it was a very interesting game. I chose the Petrov defence because of it's drawing chances. But then the game became more aggressive, and I figured it would be a duel to the death. I think I gained an important advantage at move 23, but I failed to hang onto it successfully. In the end the threat of eternal check resolved the game to a draw.
I might be missing somewhat in this interpretation due to my obvious subjectivity. If anyone would care to elaborate on the game I'd love
to hear your comments.
[edit]Baagh, I knew it, on the next-to-last move I should have played Rh8. Crafty gives it a !!. I had thought about it, but then I stupidly enough decided to take the pawn.[/edit]
Originally posted by iluphadeYou played aggressively out of the Petrov. Like I said earlier, it's usually drawish (as was the end result), but THIS game had a lot of bite right from the start. Black made wonderful use of the Knight outpost on g4, which with a smart leading Bishop move, lead to a clever forking tactic. Loved that combo.

White is to be commended for holding off the attack, and even instigating threats of his own, even though he was down on material. Kudos to both of you on a great game.
Originally posted by iluphadeI'm just curious, why 14. cxb3? It seems to me axb3 is better, opening the file on the rook, capturing towards the center, and preparing a central thrust, and giving white a better position than with cxb3. Plus, the combination that gave black the advantage wouldn't be possible.

Originally posted by chesskid001Yeah, I would have moved axb3 as well.. a nice open file for the rook and it keeps the pawns massed in the center instead of having 2 pawn islands. It's also easier to make use of doubled pawns in a central attack.

Very unlucky chesskid. Shame it ended like that because you fought back really well after the early blunder. I completely missed the forced mate after Qxe6+ because I completely missed Qh3+ when I was working it through. Good luck in the next round though and I hope I can win without relying on a mistake next time.
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to get an impression from the lot of you. I have to go out of town for a week, and I want to know if you would like me to withdraw from the tournament, so that I don't hold it up, or if everyone would be willing to wait on my return. If you wish me to withdraw in the interest of expeditiousness, then I will understand.
Let me know what you think. Thanks.
simple answer- encourage your opponent to skull you as soon as you timeout or just resign the game you can't finish. I sure don't want to enter a tournament where each new round is held up by someone on vacation beyond the stated time controls. A loss means nothing, really, but long delays make it a lot less interesting, IMHO.
