I am curious to hear opinions on something:

This game Game 2010853 was one of the last I played on RHP.

Was it distasteful and unsporting to force a draw as I did?

I didnt feel it was. However, I will admit to still being sore at missing what I felt would have led to CM had I done: 19. Qe1e8.

So I was in the frame of mind that "I'll be damned if I'm gonna lose this game if I can still force a draw."

My opponent could have blocked 25. Nh7xf8 *Kg8xf8* and probably beaten me soon after.

I ask this because when I sacced my bishop 27. Bd3xg6 I offered him a draw. He refused and we played it out a while.

However, on move 31 he sent me a nasty message stating "you disgust me, in over 100 games no one has sunken as low as you."

Was my intentionally forcing a draw such a despicable tactic? I am curious to hear what other feel to be common board etiquette in such a situation.

I just figured why lose if I dont have to?

No, not at all. If you can force a draw, you can force a draw. That's all there is to it. There's nothing wrong with that draw. 🙂

There's nothing despicable about forced draws or perpetual check: they deepen and beautify an already deep and beautiful game.

24... b5?
Should have played 24.Qd6

25.Nxf8?!
25.Qh5 may have been stronger

25...Rxf8
I think 25...Kxf8 26.Qh5 would have lost also

26.Qh5 g6
27.Bxg6 fxg6??
Missing 27...Qxf2+! 28.Kxf2 fxg6+ 29.Qf3 Rxf3+

You have nothing to be ashamed of at all, far from it. On the contrary your opponent should be embarassed for having sent such an ignorant message.

He did not deserve to win, and you correctly punished him for his mistakes by denying him the victory.

Of course not. You're entitled to play for the best possible result. Perpetual check is a great defensive resource.

Thank you all. I felt it was an unwarranted message and I am glad others feel as I do.

Masscat: Wow, your suggestion didnt even occur to me. What a nice line that would have been!

Making this thread makes me realize how badly *I* flubbed this game! but oh well 🙂

Smaug: You know for some reason I had viewed other games and noticed the draw after the 3rd repetition and for some stupid reason I thought that RHP drew the games automatically, but I just wasnt seeing someone click "claim draw" behind the scenes!

after I realized it wasnt gonna happen I claimed the draw and felt silly.

There are no brothers at the chess table, as some kind of Russian proverb states. (Although maybe it's at the card table.)

If you only get a draw from a game you were winning, it's your own fault, and the only take home message is: Tough.

There's nothing wrong with forcing a draw. Its not despicable, its normal and a commonly used tactic. You have nothing to be ashamed about.

Your opponent lost his cool and you didn't; as long as the rules are adhered to, don't worry about it, after all it's only a game - isn't it?

I would have done the same thing and then boasted to my friends about it later.

Great maneuver to get a draw out of an otherwise lost game. It is your opponent's mistake that allowed you to pull it off.

Pulling off a draw by perpetual check when you have a lost game is a great save, nothing wrong with it. Better yet is to sucker the opponent into stalemating you....that's really annoying, and harder to pull off.
