Sometimes you have to be really persistent to pull it off, I played the last few moves with my opponent while we were both logged on. As soon as I made my last queen move he logged off and didn't reappear for a number of days. And don't be fooled by his current grade, he's let a lot of games timeout recently.

I just went through the game and you did the right thing.
My only concern is that te software did not pick up the three move repeat rule.

There is no such rule.

Also, the draw due to threefold repetition of position has to be claimed... and that's not only on RHP.

Excellent save. You did the right thing, and your opponents etiquette is certainly to be questioned for what he said.

Here's a quote from some great grandmaster (painfully, I can't remember who)

"A draw is half as good as a win and infinitely better than a loss."

This game Game 2010853 was one of the last I played on RHP.

Was it distasteful and unsporting to force a draw as I did?

I didnt feel it was. However, I will admit to still being sore at missing what I felt would have led to CM had I done: 19. Qe1e8.

So I was in the frame of mind that "I'll be da ...[text shortened]... common board etiquette in such a situation.

I just figured why lose if I dont have to?
I pulled the same thing off the other day.

I was kind of in the same boat.... I am in the middle of a huge slump and I said too myself, "a draw, is a draw." That perpetual check situation is one players (of all ratings) tend to miss.

I guess perpetual check is possible without a queen . . . I would love to see anyone who has achieved that though in an actual game.

You could have claimed the draw about 50 moves sooner, but apart from that your play was perfectly ethical. 😉😛

Not to quibble, but on RHP, it's a third as good as a win and infinitely better than a loss.

No, it wouldnt actually. He had 18. ... Ba3f8

I saw that move and thought CM! as well, but then I saw the bishop and realized I needed to make the Knight move first, but as I said in my post if I had moved my queen to e8 on move 19 it would have been mate in a matter of moves.

edit: I actually am not sure it matters if I did move my Queen to e8 on the 18th or 19th move, but the Knight move was required in either case, and I mentioned the missed CM as being 19. Qe8 in my original post.
