The whole country "did what they had to do" doesn't mean they were not Nazis

I believe that Alekhine was a Nazi and that Fischer would put in an application if they were still hiring. Doesn't change the fact that they are great chess players.

It may color who my favorites are if we are talking about the whole person.
What you think all Germans were Nazis during WWII? Does that mean all Russians are communist and all Americans are capitalist? Hardly, if the Chinese take over the world are you going to be a communist? You may say your one to them only to save your butt, but are you really going to be one? Alekhine committed no war crimes that I am aware of so why label him?
Politics has no business in chess. Chess is a contest of skill and has no linking to worldly beliefs. I think this whole anti-Alekhine thing was started by some neanderthal checker player! 😀🙄

I'd also have to go with Euwe. The only man to win the World Championship in his spare time 😛

I don't think that all Germans were Nazis...

I do think that all people who contributed to Nazi propoganda were Nazis...

You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts... sorry

Like I said before... Brilliant chess player and I admire his work, just not his life.

and to be fair to Alekhine, in the WWII era, any German in Germany who wasn't part of the Nazi Party was considered strange and suspicious (heck Oskar Schindler was a Nazi and the Pope himself was in the Nazi Youth, or something like that)

btw, I suppose Fischer's my favorite.[/b]
when was Alekhine German ???
NEVER !

We are talking about what makes a chess player your favorite as well... I didn't bring this up I am replying to another ON topic post that was made in this thread.

back under the bridge, forum troll

I think Alekhine is one of the greatest chess players who ever lived and I don't blame anyone who thinks of him as thier favorite. For me... not my favorite.

My all-time favorite chess player is the great Mikhail Chigorin, founder of the Russian chess school which produced Alekhine, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Bronstein and an entire pantheon of other Soviet GMs. Chigorin was known as a master of tactics and for creating interesting opening schemes that seek to create dynamic imbalances. Although I play nowhere near as well as Chigorin, I often play the defense that bears his name. Here is a recent game:
