It was even more ludicrous than that. Seirawan actually said:-

"I am currently playing exactly 4842 concurrent games through e-mail and other postal chess methods."

(I love the use of the word 'exactly'😉

He also claimed to play 5 OTB games per day.

Despite all this, he still had the time to run several multi-national companies!

How could anyone doubt him?
Don't forget:

"I have recently realized that I am no longer that 7 year old boy from Syria Idolizing the young Robert Fischer"

and

"beside Yvette would kill me"

It's hilarious to read his posts and see how he quietly slips in bits of biography in an attempt to make himself look more real. And who the hell would give out their full address on a public website?! Makes it more funny that I probably could have beaten him.

Btw, did anyone google fifthdivision alongside chess? I found a defunct homepage on some art sight where the user 'fifthdivision' mentioned playing chess on playchess - but which was also adorned with the swastika. Fifthdivision presumably being some army term of the Nazi's?
That's "fifth column" I think.

ie, an enemy in you midst.

could've been a hint?

If the "fifthdivision" is really this one:

Then his name is Dylan Szabo and his rating seems to be about 1000 ELO (see http://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:HbAs14ubsxwJ:www.chess.ca/Ratings/ratorder.txt+%22Szabo,+dylan%22)

I must admit Szabo is a Hungarian name, but I'm more inclined to think that "Fifth Divisi ng Nazi-ish). I don't believe Dylan Szabo is the fifthdivision who played and posted here.
There is no reason to jump to the conclusion that Dylan Szabo is the FifthDivision that played here.

At the same time there is no reason to presume that he isn't.

this is the quote on his page:

"On the chessboard lies and hipocrisy do not survive long. The creative combination lays bare the presumption of a lie; the merciless fact, culminating in a checkmate, contradicts the hipocrite."

No. Computers check millions of positions. You won't match an engine if you play an engine every day, since people are not able to view millions of positions.

If a user matches an engine over and over, it is because they are using the engine. People don't think like an engine, and have just as good a chance of telling you where lightning will flash in a storm because they watch storms in the sky all the time.

Well his email address is on his site, so it would be easy enough to ask...

Go Ahead!

I found it interesting that someone e-mailed Jean Hebert and Jean Hebert said "it wasn't me"

I don't think that our "Jean Hebert" was the real Jean Hebert but what would you expect him to say if he was?

This thread kinda makes me wonder:

What happens when Fritz plays Fritz? which Fritz will win?

pffft.

edit: apparently the first post of this thread shows what happens when Fritz plays Fritz. Or do you still think he is an IM?

well he wasnt, he didnt say anything until he was prompted.

he didnt take on a name such as the Jean Hebert and Seirawan fakes did.

edit: btw I never said "He's an IM leave him alone" I merely pointed out the fact he didnt say anything about it before asked, I merely took himat his word. Apparently you cant do that around here.

The one with the bigger books, the one with nalmov endgame thingies, the one with HUGE hash tables, or simply, the one left runing longest on the fastest PC.

Adding to that, It is well known that Humans and Computers, when playing as a team actually Enhance each other.

therefore, if we had a "smart" cheat he would make Fritz choose the "anti-computer" opening and play the variations that lead to long-term benifits (past the tactical horizons of Fritz.) and/or change the setting to value a queen more/less play more/less agressive, etc.

adding to that, You could also with another strong Engine to double-check the lines.

so in short - If Fritz played Fritz it wouldn't necessary lead to a predictable, 'symetical game'

Fritz would score 50% on average.

Or it could show Fritz against Chessmaster or Hiarcs or another strong program, who knows?

Thank you Shinidoki, that is what I was wondering. I was not asking what happened when two people who are using Fritz play one another, I was curious to know what would happen if two powerful chess engines played one another.

so all other things being equal, same settings, processor speed etc would they draw? every time?

No - search about for World Computer Chess Championship results and you'll see they often play fascinating but obscure-looking games. Also have a look at some of the Freestyle tournaments on chessbase.com - often these are very interesting too.

Btw, on another site I had a series of games against a guy who was obviously a computer user. I would be curious to know which programme he had - as after I ran them through Fritz and he clearly wasn't Fritz - anyone know how to check?! I managed to beat him twice, draw once ...

"and as somebody already said, he was asked and he answered. he wasnt mugging around saying "I'm an IM!"" you on page 3

So really all you were doing was saying that we should take everyone at their word where there is no proof and no evidence to support their claims, apart from some, apparently, pretty shoddy analysis. You said he "he wasn't mugging around saying "I'm an IM!", so you were willing to believe his claims of IM status despite little or no evidence yet, whereas the doubters had more evidence against it?

No, he didn't go around saying "I'm an IM" but he did make his first appearance on the forums in order to broadcast his greatness to us all (Well, actually his second appearance-- his first appearance on the forums was whining because his games with Mary Ann hadn't disappeared after her banning and he was at his game limit. You'd think an IM would have little trouble finding someone to play against).

My guess is he wanted to test out his chess engine and also see if he could bamboozle us with plausible-seeming analysis. Notice how critical he was of Mary Ann's decision to let the computer play a move that a human would recognize as pointless-- perhaps he wanted to demonstrate how to cheat more convincingly.
