This was another one of my encounters with Mary Ann, and it was quite the slugfest. This game was also the game when I discovered for myself that she was an engine user as I explain in my notes.

Game 2072053

1. e4 c5

I think Mary Ann wanted her engine to play something a little more aggressive against me, as she probably saw how it was basically smothered to death in our french game.

2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 a6
6. Bc4!

I believe the sozin to be the best way to deal with the najdorf. I think the only way for white to obtain a meaningful advantage in the opening is to immediately take advantage of the loss of time of a6 with rapid development and a central/kingside attack.

6. ... e6
7. Bb3 b5
8. f4 b4
9. Na4 Nxe4?!

Dubious and unsound, this is probably the losing move! Although many strong grandmasters have been found on the black side of this variation (Most notably, Tal, in his wild encounters with Fischer), I have yet to discover how black can justify taking the pawn this way. In my intense analysis, some of which I have presented below, I have came to the conclusion that black should lose with best play by white. A computer evaluates this position as being somewhat better for black, but the sac of the pawn (and most of the time, more material) is so long term and positional that a computer has a hard time to see the compensation. (The strongest method of accepting the pawn sac is: 9... Bb7! 10. O-O!? Although White has both f5 and e5 at his disposal to deviate. 10. ... Bxe4! 11. Be3 Be7! I have alot of opening analysis I did on this variation and I have come to the conclusion that this is the best move. Having the option of castling immediately is important. (11... Nbd7? This is a mistake, because white can now revisit the Ne6 sacraficing theme and gain a tempo on the knight when he captures fxe6. 12. f5! e5 13. Ne6! fxe6 14. fxe6 Nc5 15. Nxc5 dxc5 16. Ba4+! Ke7 17. Qe2! With tons of attacking lines against blacks king.) 12. c3 Alot of my analysis had to do with trying to prove 12. f5!? would bring sufficient counterplay, and it does, in all lines accept the Be7 ones. For example: 12. f5? e5 13. Nf3 This is the reason Bxe4 is stronger than Nxe4. The sac Ne6, which appears in the game, is no longer possible because of the black knight stopping Qh5+. 13. ... O-O Now white has no attack on blacks king. 14. Nb6 Ra7 15. Nd5 Rb7 16. Nxe7+ Qxe7 17. Nd2 Bc6 18. Nc4 d5 19. Na5 Rc7 20. Nxc6 Nxc6 White has no more aspirations and will have a very hard time defending a pawn down and against blacks huge pawn center.) 12... a5 13. cxb4 axb4 14. f5 e5 15. Bxf7+ Kxf7 16. Ne6 Qa5 And white is hard pressed to justify the investment of a piece.

10. O-O Bb7

(The move Tal played against Fischer, 10. ... g6 leads to a position with wild tactics where white comes out on top with a better position and equal material after: 11. f5! gxf5 12. Nxf5!! Bb7 (Tal also deviated here against Fischer with the dubious 12. ... Rg8?!) (12. ... exf5? Qd5! Ra7 Qd4 Forks the black rooks.) 13. Qg4! A move that took me quite a long time to find, but I eventually saw how active the queen could be along the a4 rank. 13. ... Nf6 (Also, not, 13. ... d5? where 14. Nh6! maintains the tension after 14. ... Nf6 (14. ... Bxh6? 15. Bxh6 Prevents black from castling, and allows white to build up a fierce attack against the king in the center.) 15. Qf3! White now has an attack that materializes itself after, 15. ... Nbd7 16. Ng4 Be7 17. Bg5 Rg8 18. Nxf6+ Bxf6 19. Bxf6 Nxf6 20. Qxf6 Qxf6 21. Rxf6 and white is up a piece for a pawn in a won endgame.) 14. Qxb4 with advantage.)

11. f5 e5
12. Ne6! fxe6
13. Qh5+ Kd7
14. fxe6+ Kc8
15. Be3

Everything so far has been book play and after this move by white I can't find any good reply for black.

15. ... Nf6

This is a mistake as it allows white to play his follow up, but other moves don't seem to offer much either. The funny thing is, I had already played a game in this variation and my opponent played the exact same course as in this game up until move 22! Game 2051749 If anyone wants to see how black was demolished in that game! (15... Be7 16. Nb6+ Kc7 17. Nd5+ Bxd5 18. Bxd5 Nf6 19. Rxf6 Bxf6 20. Bxa8 Blacks very weak king position shouldnt take too long to expose.) (15... Nc6 16. Bb6 Qe7 17. Rf7 And black is busted.)

16. Rxf6!!

The point. Black can't play Nf6 because then white just takes with his relatively inactive rook for blacks only (!) other developed piece besides Bb7.

16. ... gxf6

Lets just take a look at the position. White has 4 pieces developed, a sound king position, and alot of attacking chances. What does black have? One developed piece, and an extra rook sitting in the corner doing nothing! I'd say it's party time for white.

17. Nb6+ Kc7
18. Nc4! Nd7

Believe it or not, this is forced! (18... Kc8 19. Bb6 Qe7 20. Nxd6+! Qxd6 21. Qe8+ With mate to follow.)

19. exd7 Qxd7
20. Nb6 Qg7
21. Nd5+!

Crucial, as if white takes the rook, it leads to nothing more than equality. (21. Nxa8+? Bxa8 22. Qe2 f5! And white's ambitions of attack have disintegrated since the queen is pinned to the defence of the g2 pawn.)

21. ... Bxd5

(21... Kb8 22. Qe8+ Bc8 23. Nb6 And white invades blacks king position.)

22. Bxd5 Rb8
23. a4!

The key idea, white's rook is activated via a3 to save a tempo. Black has a choice to either exchange the b-pawn now and let the rook activate immediately or lose the b-pawn later for nothing after white's queen regroups to attack the queenside from e2.

23. ... Qd7
24. Qe2 Kd8

Again the engine's king is on the run!

25. Qxa6 h5

A desperate attempt to get the bishop into the game from h6. Sadly, the c1-h6 diagonal is of no importance at all and black never gets any counterplay from this maneuver.

26. a5 Bh6
27. Bf2

(27. Bxh6 Rxh6 28. Qd3 f5 Allows black a second chance at trying to equalize using his central pawn mass. The text was played because the bishop can support the advance of the a-pawn from it's post on f2.)

27. ... Ke7
28. Qd3

To allow the a-pawn to advance.

28. ... Rb5

Probably the best idea, sac'ing the exchange back to take some material off the board so white has less to attack the black king and support the advance of the a-pawn with. Black is still losing, however.

29. a6

White's a-pawn is quickly becomming a real threat.

29. ... Rxd5
30. Qxd5 Qe6
31. Qb7+ Qd7
32. Qxb4

As previously stated, goodbye b-pawn and hello a1 rook.

32. ... Qc6
33. a7 Rg8

(33... Qxc2 34. a8=Q)

34. g3

(34. Bg3 Be3+ 35. Kh1 Ra8 Allows black a little more activity than I had wanted, and the bishop is better on the a7-g1 diagonal anyway.)

34. ... Ra8
35. Ra3! Ke6

(35... Qxc2 36. Qb7+ Forking the rook and king.)

36. Rc3 Qd5
37. Rd3 Qc6
38. Qb8! e4

Although this probably delays mate the longest, it is not the best defence. Black can only hope now that white blunders, and e4 only clairify's the situation. White can now launch a raid against blacks king and can use the open a5-h5 rank as a tool. d5 was best, keeping the center strong.

39. Qb3+ Kf5
40. Rc3 Qe8
41. Qd5+ Kg6

Run sally run!

42. Rc7 Bg7
43. Bd4!

All of whites pieces spring into action for the final head-hunt.

43. ... Rd8
44. h3!

Best! Black is in zugzwang, and this quiet little move gives black the unwanted obligation of moving, while at the same time supporting the advance g4 to smash the game home with Qf5+ or Qh5+.

44. ... Kh6
45. Rf7

Exploiting the king move.

45. ... Kg6
46. g4 hxg4
47. hxg4 Qb5

After this move, there was no doubt in my mind that Mary Ann was using an engine. I had the suspected that she may be using one before this as whenever I would try to discuss the game with her she would give some lame excuse like "i hate to type", but never-the-less, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. After this move though it is obvious that she is using an engine. No human player would ever play this move, it is just an engines futile attempt to delay mate as long as possible. Any human (relatively strong) player would resign before doing this, as they would see there is no point in continuing on if they're just giving material away. I realize that this may not be evidence enough for some that she was using an engine, and I'm not trying to convince anyone that she was, these are just my own conclusions. I had found evidence enough for myself that she wasn't the one playing her games and the admins also made the decision that she wasn't. Mind you, I have never done anything to try to get Mary Ann banned in any way, which means other people have complained about her and share my opinion.

48. Rxg7+ Kxg7
49. Qxb5 Kf7
50. Qf5 Ra8
51. Qxf6+ Ke8
52. Qh8+ Ke7
53. Qxa8 d5
54. Qxd5 resigns

I suppose this game may cause some controversy with the Nxe4 variation players, as I've basically stated that Nxe4 is "refuted", but what better to argue about than chess!?

Flirting?! LOL!

Not had much experience with flirting have you??! LMAO!!

But what you have posted could be classed a flirtatious! (young sweet girl! LOL!) 😛

EDIT: I was actually defending her against Xanthos who appears to be very critical against the majority of the females on the board.

I'm usually a bit sceptical when people claim that their opponents are using an engine, but in this game it is painfully obvious. 47....Qb5 suggests that not only is Black using an engine, but that she doesn't know even the basics of the game. It's weird how every forum post by her seemed to be claiming that other people were using engines to unfairly defeat her.

I imagine that a relatively strong player using an engine (so that player can check moves before playing them) would be very hard to detect. But, then again, why would they bother?

Very interesting. Once again, thanks for posting this.

okay maybe I over-reacted a little. But that "she is polite" seems so odd. I dont think she is more polite than anyone else (expect ravello and Xantoboy)
