My game against him isn't on his graph, so I presume it was his last to finish. All his other losses state that they were lost by TO. Mine was a resignation accompanied with the message "Player banned - game resigned"??

I know of two other players who were playing fiMVon and got a resignation accompanied by the same message. If all his losses in the graph were lost by timeout, it seems that those games don't show in the graph either. Weird indeed.

I just had a look at his public games, and he TO'd in a lot of games leading up to and including the 17th. Then he had about 50-60 resignations on the 17th, none of which show up on his graph.

Actually over 100. And they all happened at the same time, which he wouldn't have been able to do himself.

Yes, I had the same when one of my opponent's was banned.

I have been the opponent of so many players who have later been banned, meman (one of my most frequent opponents, actually), Exy and so on.

So it was automated. And the games obviously became unrated games which would explain why they aren't visible on the graph, but the question remains, why isn't he on the Removed Players List and what was he banned for?

I was completely bummed out by the fiMVon ones, and also noticed he/she wasn't on the banned players list. Very odd.

And totally ruinous to the most interesting tournament I've ever been involved in.

I asked Russ about fiMVon, and got this reply:

"That was a mistake by me, I used the ban script to resign all his games at his request. But I forgot a message is sent to all his opponents saying he has been banned. He is not banned and can return at anytime."

Thanks for clearing that up.

So, if he requested that his games be resigned, shouldn't they have an effect on the ratings? I mean, if he does decide to come back, or already is, wouldn't him requesting resignations in his games just be a cheap excuse so he won't lose rating points? Doesn't seem fair to the people he was playing.

Exactly the question that occurred to me when I received this reply. I agree with you 100%. You should not be allowed to resign all your games without penalty. Unfortunately, I don't know the story behind this, there may be a seriously good reason why this action was taken. But even if there is a mistake, I'm not sure anything can be done in retrospect to fix it.

I doubt if Russ will read this thread, so I will send a follow-up PM for further clarification.

Why did he leave or resign his games exactly?

Seems a very odd method. He could just as easily go in and resign games when it was his turn.

Oh well. Either way, it still really mucks up the ending of a great tournament. Sigh.

I doubt that we will ever know, but people have various reasons for wanting to cut down or even suspend their involvement in the site. I recently moved house and was timed out to the tune of 80 ratings points (and increasing - I guessed what to do in a load of other games and the chickens are coming home to roost...) along with my job being under threat due to some lost contracts I will probably need to resign in around 75% of my games - so I'll be around 1,200 - stuff happens.

It is nice to hear about a player not banned - I hope Russ sends out a message of "oops he wasn't cheating my mistake" at least to their opponents.
