I doubt that we will ever know, but people have various reasons for wanting to cut down or even suspend their involvement in the site. I recently moved house and was timed out to the tune of 80 ratings points (and increasing - I guessed what to do in a load of other games and the chickens are coming home to roost...) along with my job being under threat ...[text shortened]... uss sends out a message of "oops he wasn't cheating my mistake" at least to their opponents.

Originally posted by kingcolemkPeoples standard of play can vary during a game, I'm better at endgames than middle games, sometimes people only really wake up when they've already made a mistake - but if you think that someone is using an engine then after the game has finished analyse it with an engine. If you get a large match-up rate, or the engine can't find refutations to your opponents play then there is a possibility that they were using an engine and you can send your evidence to one of the games mods.
How can I tell if an opponent is using an engine against me ?
I've had a couple of games where an opponents level of play seemed to suddenly leap to a much higher standard during the game. So I am wondering.......?

A player may make seemingly nothing moves in the opening and early middle game. These positional moves would make the pieces strategically placed to be ready if certain files/diagonals open up. So you might believe you're on parity until some exchanges, and then you can get annihilated in just a few moves.
This doesn't mean that your opponent just switched on an engine, just that his development and positioning of the pieces was better.
I'm playing some OTB games now with a friend of mine who just started playing 4 or 5 months ago. He's already a good player, but I still instruct him. Often, I'd point out a move that I had made 20 moves before hand and say, I did this in anticipation of this diagonal opening later or in anticipation of being able to lure away the pieces defender, or what not.

I'm not saying they cheated, but I can't help wondering.....
