A forced mate with K &2N vs K is not possible. The game is drawn.
Originally posted by Dragon FireIronically, K & 2N vs. K has no forced win, but if Black has a pawn, the mate is often possible because of the fact that the defender can't be stalemated.

But K + 2N vs. K+p is. I have never had a K + N + B vs. K in a real OTB game, but I had K + 2N vs K+p at least three times.
Originally posted by Dragon FireJust for technicality, can't K+N+N vs. K result in checkmate? I know it would have to be a helpmate, but I figured it could be done, just that it was unlikely to get help from the opponent (obvious with helpmates)...

Originally posted by wittywonkaYes, there is a "helpmate" in the K&2N vs. K endgame.

Originally posted by wittywonkaI got checkmated by king and two knights once. He also had a rook pawn, and to take that I had to get my king stuck in the corner where I duly got checkmated by the two knights. It was probably the last time I got checkmated as I thought the ending was amusing enough to play it to the finish.

Originally posted by Dragon FireI will certainly find the last two very useful.

I've been playing chess for almost forty years, and I can't remember EVER having to mate with just a bishop, knight and king. (Of course, that might be because I've never been up a bishop and a knight! 🙂)
Originally posted by Fat LadyA thorough understanding of the K+B+N vs. K checkmate might net you an extra half-point over a twenty-five year tournament career.

Then again, you might lose several points by failing to win or draw rook endings that you could have been studying instead of the K+B+N vs. K checkmate.
